So... Crank checked and said to be only needing a fine polish- virtually zero wear! Very pleased. However, not all good news... Cylinder bores are worn and engineer said 'some people would make do with it but you'd only be putting off the inevitable... if it were mine I'd want to rebore it'. So it's gonna be done. To what extent will only be decided when we have some oversized pistons in our hands and can be 100% certain of their size.
I've noticed a few sets of pistons available in various oversizes and also I've spotted some HC pistons... should I or shouldn't I? I already have a hot cam and a twin DCNF set up to go on if I choose to fit them... might be a nice combination. Any thoughts?

That's a cracking workspace you have there, very envious of that. Mine lives in a garage that is so full of other junk the car needs to come outside to work on it. At least it's under cover, I suppose.

Those early bumpers make a good looking car into a stunner, don't they? I hadn't really thought about losing by California bumpers until I started looking at the earlier models.

Yes Hywel, it is great to have an undercover space to work in. Just behind the X1-9 under a cover is a Lancia HPE Volumex... that's my next project :-)

And yes, early bumpers all the way... I really dislike the later bumpers, and I believe the USA spec were even bigger so if your legalities allow for it I would get them off quickly. The true beauty of the design shines through whn the little bumpers are there.

Thanks for your comments :-)

Just been talking to my engine reconditioner chap. He says to avoid the high compression pistons as, a) they only raise the already quite high standard compression slightly, b) they can cause uneven idle, and c) as they are 1mm oversize I'm not leaving anything for later work if it's ever necessary. Oh, and d) they are twice the price! Sounds reasonable.
Any thoughts?

Hi Andrew,
I'm new to this club I've just recently joined, its very humbling to see that I'm not the only one in this situation. I was hoping to join this club much earlier than now, but events with this car had me concentrating on major repairs to the whole body shell.

I think you are doing a sterling job...and hope within the next week or so to upload some pictures of my restoration project. I look forward to more updates on yours and maybe we can compare notes!!!

This is just a small sample of whats to come

So... £600+ worth of Eurosport's repair panels are on their way to me right now and I'm just about to order replacement pistons.
Spending money is too easy with the internet!

I have some in the same batch sent out today!

We are lucky as aren't Eurosport the only company in Europe to sell newly manufactured repair panels?
Midwest Bayless in LA sell some too. X1/9 parts Holland only sell original major panels!

Yes, we're very lucky. When I started to research what was available I was amazed actually. I'll see how lucky we are when I see the quality of the repair panels... I have faith, or I wouldn't have spent so much money, but... we'll see.
Yes, Henk's new panels are very expensive... I was very lucky to pick up a new old stock front wing and a very good s/h one off ebay last week. Necessitated a 500 mile round trip to pick 'em up but... needs must.
Looks like we'll both be busy with the welder... :)

Yes I purchased some panels from Eurosport they didn't fit properly I had to do some major adjustments and add some extra metal. I did speak to Eurosport about it they told me it's bit of a risk as they are all hand made and may not be an exact fit and you will have to do quite a bit of fettling. I did want two new rear left/right wing panels but the cost was too much so I made repairs to both sides...this took an absolute age.

Yeah, I suppose I'm expecting to have to do a little fettling... even so, I'm sure they're much better than anything I could make from scratch...

Panels arrived today actually. I haven't had a look yet though.
And a new set of KS pistons arrived too :cheer:

You'll be fine, just think...if we lived in a perfect world how boring. I was probably feeling a bit tight at the time, but if there's a next time i think I'd do the same as you and pay the extra for the panels after all I did splash out for Pro-strip.

We'll have to swap pictures :)

I've just purchased a rotisserie to aid the restoration. Never used one before but always fancied it. I'll post pics when it's mounted, expecting delivery next week. Mounting the rear looks relatively straightforward; the front will be trickier. Having custom mounts fabricated to clear the arrow shaped front panel.
Can't wait to have proper and comfortable access to the underside :cheer:
