Hot start and fuel evaporation while moving

Hello Ricardo not to worry I didn't take it as disagreement! We can only put forward what we have found and then hopefully there will be a positive result.

I also bought that type of filter for another, different, project where the viton rubber tip of the needle valve was always accumulating residue. I never used it though as it was most likely that the petrol itself was evaporating due to lack of use and leaving the residue there. This was many years ago. However, I have to say the Weber 34 on the x19 was easier to strip than the carb at fault.

Well......this hasn't turned out to be as enjoyable as I hoped!
Carb has been on and off a few times now.
I've had it almost running with the carb overflowing with fuel to not enough fuel being delivered and a backfire when trying to start.
Fiddled with it some more today, refitted but it just wouldn't start.

So, removed the top half again and brought it inside so I could take a deep breath and check over the basics again.

1 - Fuel/Air mixture screw gently screwed all the way in and then unscrewed 1 1/2 turns as factory setting.....check!
2 - Idle screw backed off so it's just almost touching the throttle mechanism and then 1 turn in as factory setting......check!
3 - Carb body top held vertically and tipped slightly left to check the closed needle/float distance from the gasket.....6mm.....check!
4 - Carb body top held vertically and tipped slightly right to check open needle/float distance from gasket.....15mm....check!
(I made a card with a 6mm line and 15mm line as David Moult suggested.....photos attached)

Carb is now re-fitted again and all piped up. Just waiting for the battery to charge up as it's depleated now.

One thing that I've got on my mind is if I've not reassembled the automatic choke correctly.
I think I have as it seemed quite straight forward. Didn't know if that might be a cause of it not starting.
I don't think so but any advice is welcome.

If it doesn't start after this.....I may have to get someone to take a look at it for me.......I hate being defeated however!

Gaz.

just an idea , yes david moult seems to know his stuff , but as a second line of attack , maybe look on webcon site the weber specialists and just check to see there specs for the float position , im sure you will get it going eventually ,

I applied a think layer of Blue Hylomar on both sides of the carb's middle gasket and make sure that i t tightened the securing screws in a criss-cross pattern working from the middle outwards and in stages.

I also checked the faces with a steel rule for level.

No leaks.

hook up a plastic hose to the fuel inlet and, blow into it, at the same time rocking the carb body to simulate the valve being in the open and closed positions. You should not be able to blow through with the lave closed. If you can, something is wrong. Then reassemble base and do the same again.

Automatic Choke: make sure the fork in the spring mechanism has the accelerator shaft's tang located within it.

let us know.

Good pics by the way!

I have enjoyed David Moult's vids on youtube: David if you read this, please do more on the technical side of the things you have encountered/solved/not solved etc!

cheers

…..she’s alive! Finally got her going and all is good. To say I’m a happy man would be an understatement!
It wouldn’t start initially but I unwound the fuel/air mixture screw some more and she fired up. Brought her up to full temperature and tweaked a little.
The automatic choke ratcheted down lovely as the temperature increased.
I’ve taken a video but the file size is too large.
Thanks to you all for your input.

brilliant , percy wins every time ,percy verence , just a heads up i ignored the baseline settings ie mixture screw , i just unwound it until revs dropped then wound it back in until i had them fast and smooth , i think mines around 3 and half turns out , i will pay a local mot centre to put it on his gas emiisions tester to check the co and hydrocarbons and if it needs richening or leaning i will then adjust the screw , yes and check colour of the plugs after a good drive of around 50 miles that will give you an idea of how the mixture is

im just a bit worried about the plastic fuel filter still , it gets hot in that bay , and if it was me id be more comfortable with a metal filter , you can get a selection of filters even the same as yours on ebay or if you want to see the fuel you can get inline glass filters all under £20

.....wanted to give you all a final update!
What with work commitments and waiting for the weather to break, today was the only day I could go for a run with the sun out.
Did a couple of small tweaks to the fuel/air mixture screw and the idle screw.

The smile on my face was making my cheeks ache!
Took a friend out for the longest run out so far....maybe about an hour an half.
My friend (who has a pristine Ford Capri 2.0S) absolutely loved it and couldn't stop smiling!

I can honestly say that it ran the best it's ever ran before.
Very responsive and sounded absolutely friggin' awesome.....my baby Ferrari is back!
It never missed a beat and idled perfectly at every roundabout and set of traffic lights.

I'm absolutely buzzing with excitement for this summer.
I'm also really proud with doing all the work myself so far, growing and learning with the X1/9.
I've learnt so much.

Thanks to everyone to contributing to the thread and helping me out.
It's really made a difference to my confidence with taking the X1/9 out on longer journeys now.

Ha! back in 1980, when I was choosing my first brand new car, I looked at the TR7, Aflasud 1.5ti, X1/9 and Capri 2.0l GL
I chose the capri! Well it was really practical - fridge freezer in the back etc but what a terrible compromise it turned out to be.
Never mind, 9years later and I got my X1/9 and still have it.

At the risk of being banned from the forum, if anyone wants to swap a Capri for my x1/9, I am listening.....!
