Gearbox out... at last and wihbone shim question

Hi everyone has been a while since I have been on.

At last had a free morning so decided to whip out the gearbox and investigate my 3rd gear fault. Was suprised and pleased at how straight forward the job went with one 1 bolt needing cut. took 3 hours in total.

I decided to remove the rear suspension as one complete unit. found this a much easier option than splitting it all up on the car.

I have also started cleaning up th engine bay and am very pleased to say the the car has almost no rust in any of the important places. This was obviously a BIG relief.

Will strip the box during the week.

The question about the rear suspension arm shims... I plan to fit poly bushes all round and wanted to know if the new bushes elliminate the need for shims? or do I just have to wait and see. If I need to re-shim how do I work out what shims are needed.

Cheers

Guy

Guy when you find somewere that sells those poly bushes give us a shout I fancy doing the same thing.

I have recently removed my box and engine but had such a hard time putting those bloody shims back in I decided to go for the struggle and left the wishbones in place LOL.

Cheers,

Tony.

When I rebuilt my gearbox I removed it the Tiff way as well. Worked great for me. 8)

Hi Tony

As Les said Claire from Eurosport can supply some of the poly bushes

The lancia Montecarlo website

www.montehospital.com

is a good place to look for X1/9 parts. I know that the Monte shares the same rear suspension as us but I am trying to find out if it is the same as the front. Will let you know what I discover.

Cheers

well I have just spoken to the chap at the montehospital. Very pleasant bloke. Have been informed that all suspension bushes on the lancia are interchangable with the x1/9 and he has them all in stock. Also found out that a lot of the brake components are interchangable as well.

Will be buying stuff from him soon

Cheers

As I understand it the shims are there to take out any chassis variations and hence minimise play for the wishbones. Everything else being equal, then you'd want to put back the original shims in the same locations.

I can only comment on the poly bush type that Les got and the tubes with these are machined to be the same length as the original rubber bush type, so the recommendation would be to replace with the same shims.

Just for the record, you can also get the the front track control arm poly set from Eurosport (UK) and the matching tie bar bushes are due soon.

GPW is indeed correct that these parts are the same as for the Monte Carlo, but i'm intriqued why you'd want to pay premium prices for equivalent parts :?

Forgot to add that it would be well worth freeing up the rear track adjusters while they're on the floor and then get a decent 4 wheel alignment done once your new bushes are in place :P

Hi Bones thanks for the reply.

As a true Scot I dont like paying premium prices for anything. But I was will ing to pay a little extra for a full matching set of bushes. If Claire is getting TCA bushes to match the others she sells I will wait. But the Montehospital isnt to bad compared to other places I have looked and they sell parts I have not been able to source elsewhere.

To me any place that you can get good reliable parts is useful to know about

Cheers

Yes, granted they do all need to be the same colour - i've heard it can knock off 4-5 seconds a lap on most circuits

Joking aside, it's always good to get the same make items if your budget permits - in this case, the front TCA pair are available in the same funky Indigo colour - the tie bar donuts though are new items and currently 'in testing', so will hopefully be about shortly.

Well after a lot of swearing and things get thrown around I retreated and removed the wishbone. Engine was back in very quickly. Even though it took an hour to get wishbone bolts out.

I whipped an angle grinder through my bolts as they where siezed into the bushes. Took about 2 mins
