I haven't been around for a while so I thought I might make a little thread about one of my rescued cars. This shell was due for the crusher having been almost completely stripped of all useful parts. I brought it up to MJ Welding in Shrewsbury, to join the queue of classics awaiting Mark's wizardry.

Thanks guys!
This is the engine, originally a 1.6 SOHC from a Punto Sporting...
These are the new pistons...
With the above, using a crankshaft from a Stilo 1.6 DOHC engine, one can achieve a 1.9 litre SOHC turbo engine in essentially the same space that the original X1/9 engine occupied.
However, after some evening tinkering...
I have found that the later DOHC engines from the Bravo and Stilo can fit without too much difficulty. In fact this has been done before; in the distant past when I was the mag editor I wrote an article on a prototype of the Bravo engine fitted in an X1/9 by a really nice chap in the US. There are one or two others that have done this transplant too. However, they have used custom engine mounts. By rearranging the cam belt I have managed to fit a standard X1/9 "snail" mount. The engine bolts up to the X1/9/Uno/Punto family of gearboxes so physical installation of the DOHC engine is straightforward.
Next step will be to try building up a 1.9 DOHC turbo engine using a Bravo 1.6 block and Stilo 1.6 crankshaft, with the Wossner pistons.

I have been looking at improving the brakes on the car. These are Alfa 155 calipers mocked up on an X1/9 hub, something I was looking at a couple of years ago. They are the setup currently fitted to a Dallara rep I sold recently. These do require 14" wheels...
I have since discovered via this forum that Punto GT calipers are similar so I have sourced a few pairs to play with.
