Julian - to be fair I only went to them based upon your recommendation :P I was desperate to find someone willing to undertake the job of setting up the twin carbs and overhauling the brake system on a lairy X1/9 I had at the time - I had already taken it to a couple of other places with uninspiring results and was getting fed up with it until I took it to S&P and after that it ran beautifully for a good couple of years and many thousand of miles with no issues. Maybe I was just lucky?! ;)

It was only in the last year of my dealing with them that I discovered what had happened. At the time I was hugely disappointed but I still gave them the benefit of the doubt but after what they did to my car in the remaining time just left me cold - we didn't part on the best of terms. When they did things right (most of the time) it was very good work but the stuff that was done wrong was very wrong and cost me an incredible amount of money in repairs, rebuilds, wasted race entry fees, trips all around the country, etc.

Part of the problem is that in motorsport you either learn to be philosophical about mechanical failure or you have a heart attack. I'm still here so I guess I just got laid back about it and went with the flow...

I still admire some of what they did for myself and other customers. Like I said, the good work was fantastic and a world away from a specialist garage that had something to do with my original car - their idea of quality control was laughable...dangerous even.

I used S&P for about 4 years to look after my racer and reshell it after it had a big accident.
I think the last time I visited was about 2006 but it is a while back now and I can't say for sure definitely no later than 2007 though as I've been living in Manchester since then.

I can assure you that Terry was still working way past 2001 - the first time the car ran with a new engine at Brooklands was 2003 (I think - all a bit vague might have been 2002) after the original engine expired at Castle Combe and I drove straight from S&P to get there. Terry looked after the car for a while after that. Dave did a bit of the work - generally anything to do with bodywork. The X1/9 last ran in that incarnation in 2004 and I spent a year or so afterwards getting the new shell prepared - all in their workshop.

All very true - then again I don't charge customers for my work and when I make a mistake I sort it out.

The green car *is* very good though

it depends what you want, the dallara kit is pretty nice and very wide,i think rachael has a couple of sets she may part with one for enough pieces of gold :)

OK so after doing my research I now know what I am going to do with my x19 regarding wheel arches cheers for the help.
One other thing if anyone can help I really like the stance of this car that's why I asked about the arches but does anyone know what size the wheels are?

8"s on the back and 6"s on the front would be my guess.

Can I just remind everyone that although it's good to have a lively debate I don't want threads de-generating on the forum so please be aware that I will remove postings or remind people if it the debate gets too heated.

The link below is just a reminder of how I intend to run the forum moving forward.
