1300 resto

Needed a boost to kick start my 1300 resto. Tony's facebook pics of his turbo brought me back on line oh! and an ebay purchase.

Got a couple of repo panels from Claire today. Fitted one allready and quite a good fit,

did you weld them yourself?

Yep. Not a great welder but with an angle grinder and a bit of time I get there in the end.

What type of welder do you use/rod and details please as im planning on having a go myself

I would rule out stick welding if you are new to the sport. I use a clark 150 mig with gas. CO2/Argon mix is the easiest to weld with but CO2 gives better penetration but the hotter weld will blow holes easier. I use CO2. FIAT metal is thin and would be messy with stick. Use 0.6mm steel reel. Mig is quite easy to get a good result on a clean test piece on the bench. You'll rarely have this on you car and mig hates rust and underseal so you have to clean as much gunk off as possible. I would say go for it. There are plenty of good web sites on the net to get you started.

After a quick grind,fill and paint.

Great work Grimy, I did a similar 1300 resto back in 1986 and I used a Mig that was gasless it had the flux in the wire. I went to my local tech and learned how to weld which was great fun. I always regretted selling that car

Mark that mig in the listing would be good Clarke have a good name and Practical Classics are always running tests and comparisons with the Clarke machines always performing well.

Thanks Les. After months of doing nothing I've got the finger out. Mark, that's a similar model to mine but comes as gasless. I would go for one that allready is set up for gas unless your welding outside where flux core would be more appropriate.

I've always used a Clarke 130 Turbo MIG welder for my panel work. It's fairly easy to do wheelarch repair sections by tacking and grinding back. A joggling tool is a good investment for panel work just to help overlap the panels and give you a nice recess to weld in. Maybe we should have a mini meet and welding session in the North West.
