Headlight Issue

Headlight Issue was created by Andy Rowley
I am having problems with my headlights.

This has been an intermittent fault for a while, but they have always come on. However, now they are not coming on at all.

So, I slide the switch to the first position and the lights pop up and the side lights come on.
I then slide it to the main headlight position and they go off. The high beam on the steering column works OK.
I have swapped the headlight switch but it makes no difference.

Has anyone else had this issue or does anyone have any words of wisdom that could help me out please?
I'm afraid electrics aren't one of my strong points :(

Do you have relays on the dip-beam?
If not, sounds like there is a problem with the dip beam wiring.
If yes suspect the relay(s)
You can get a long way with a cheap multimeter and good dose of common sense! But it is always time consuming to chase through the continuities and voltage drops
Happy hunting!

Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply.

No I haven't done the relay mod on the dipped beam. This I think is what I need to try first.
Being a bit of an electrical moron I have tended to leave these kind of things...
And the common sense bit is lacking as well

A quick update on this issue:

I have checked through the circuit and traced the wiring. I tried a spare switch that I had and had the same result i.e. no dipped headlight.
I then checked connections around the steering column and found a burnt joint on one of the connection blocks. I have now made a new joint for this wire. However, the issue was still there.
I then had a look at the fuse box. I swapped the relay for another and still no dipped headlight.
I then checked the wiring connection blocks that go into the back of the fuse box.
Here I found a number of dirty spade connections. These were all cleaned and put back together.
Happily the lights are now working again. :)

So that's one job sorted out. Just need to put everything back together now.

Starter motor issue to sort out next............

good news.

one of the things I like best about the Exey is flashing people out in traffic. The process of flicking the light switch on, and then having them come up, blink on, and then off again, always leaves the other motorist smiling in my experience

If you put reflective foil under the headlamps/spoiler, you can flash mainbeam without lifting the headlamp pods. Obviously this works much better on pre US big bumpers, even with the brake vents
