Hi all, thanks for advice on starters it turns over lovely now just need fuel to go to carburetor no fuel going to carburetor at all ?, I've just removed fuel pump with great difficulty, any tips on getting bolts back on without all the hassle I almost lost will to live this afternoon, so fuel pump is sealed type mechanical, no screws to open it up, Haynes manual talks of kit to overhaul it but not my pump, I'm assuming you can't overhaul it, so does anyone think having new one will sort problem out or could it be something else? any advice most welcome, its a 1988 x19 bertone...

Have you replaced your fuel lines? Modern unleaded fuel degrades the original fuel hose rubber.

Do you have an inline filter? If so, might be worth replacing/leaving off until you've established the fuel is getting through.
Careful with the Haynes manual. The general text is for the 1300 which is different. You need to check the supplement section towards the back.

I am guessing you removed the access hatch behind the spare wheel to get at the fuel pump?

I would check first to see if the pump is actually pumping fuel through before replacing. Then work your way towards the carburetor and checking the jets aren't blocked.

Hi in haven't changed hose's it runs in in leaded with additive I haven't had it converted, I was thinking of changing in line filter, is there way of testing pump? How would i check carb for blocked jets? Even with back panel off still difficult to get to bolts on petrol pump, thanks for reply I'll have another go.......

Why not take the oppertunity to go for an electric pump. By pumping cold fuel into the carburettor they help hot starting. Also my car starts immediately if I am patient and let the pump fill the carb, I can hear fuel being pumped back into the tank. I removed all the carb cooling fan kit and now there is lots of space for an electric fule pump and filter there, plus acsess to the engine is much better with more space for air to circulate. The cooling fan never cooled the carb, its air intake by the filler was too small.

Problems caused by blocked jets and general crud in the carb is a very common issue on older cars, especially ones that have sat for a while. You can't really check the smaller galleries in the carb, you just assume the worst and act accordingly. Dismantle the carb and using an air line carefully blow out all the holes you can find (easy to blow important bits of the carb into the weeds if you haven't double checked your dismantling) While your at it you might as well fit a carb refurb kit (contains gaskets, float needle, etc.)

Thanks again speedy fiat, I'll be so glad when this car fires up, I'll try that, but ,at moment no fuel at all is going to carb to know what's going on, there is nothing is going from tank to pump and from pump to carb, nothing in inline filter and when I disconnect tubes and pump there is no fuel anywhere not even a smell of fuel when I try to start.. but I guess when I do get fuel up to carb I'll have more problems no doubt and I'll refer to this advice....thanks again speedy fait

A fuel supply problem I had with getting my X1/9 running after several years layup was the gauze filter on the end of the pick up pipe in the tank had become gunged up with old petrol deposits and rubbish from the bottom of the tank. You can at it by unbolting the whole pipe/float level sender assembly from the top of the tank for inspection. I ended up cutting the gauze filter off and having to remove the tank for a proper stem clean clean.
