Oil manufacturers need to bring out new specifications to keep us excited about buying their products hence the bewildering variety. The specific changes in viscosity and additives will have some effect, more so on modern engines with much tighter tolerances chasing higher fuel economy, but perhaps not as much as the advertising suggests . Given the age of the Fiat engine design and the actual wear on most of the engines then I would suggest a good quality 20/50 would be suitable. However, if you top up with an oil with a slightly lower viscosity your engine isn't going to seize up, or, produce previously unheard of economy. Regular changing of the oil is one of the better ways of ensuring a long engine life. An engine not used regularly, laid up for periods and on shorter trips will deteriorate quicker due to internal engine condensation, combustions products (especially when running on the choke) and leaky pistons rings all getting into the oil.
Another advantage of changing the oil in the chance of a bit of detective work on what you find in the bottom of the sump or container you've drained the oil into. Bits of metal suggest one component is trying to escape from the engine. If it stinks of petrol then your carbs are badly out of tune and/or your piston rings/bores are getting worn.

Thank you speedy Fait, that's great now I can get started trying to start up this 1988 X19 hasn't been started for about 8 years may be even longer, I'm excited and nervous at the same time, then shortly after I will hopefully sell her but reluctantly, need the space in garage now and hasn't been on road since March 2003, it has had all rust cut our and new metal welded in all in good sound order is the metalwork, so fingers crossed,
Thanks again
Dale
