Advice starting up x19 was created by Dale Dudley
Hi all, I'm planning to start up my X19 after about 8 years maybe longer to be quite honest I can't remember so that is very rough. I'm planning to sell my 1988 x19 it hasn't been on road since 2003, but been in dry garage and before that all rust cut out welded and resprayed, so question is any advice for getting her started up, I'm getting new battery soon, need to get it out if garage to take pics etc, it runs on 4 star petrol so has additive into unleaded petrol, any advice welcome, thanks all

Shouldn't really start it up with that timing belt staying in the same position for 8 years plus, just turn it over by hand to see if the engine has not seized.

There is a large nut on the end of the crankshaft (36mm I think) that can be access by taking the offside rear wheel off. I would change the cambelt as a matter of course along with some new plugs and fresh petrol. Turn it over by hand and then with the plugs removed spin it over on the starter, you can check for a spark at the same time as the points may have got a bit of surface corrosion on them. A little squirt of WD down the bores wont hurt. It all seems alright then fire it up. Run it until warm checking for leaks and strange noises, then turn it off and have a really good inspection all around.
You will also need take car over the brakes as the discs will likely have surface corrosion on them, or be ruined depending on how damp the garage is. Also brake hoses and seals may have perished and so check these as well. The clutch may be stuck on the flywheel and so trying to get it into first gear while facing the back of the garage may spoil the joy of getting the engine started.
Its worth getting the car to a very basic running state as it will be fare more attractive to any purcahser
