Hello, I know this has been covered many time over the years but would anyone be able to confirm if Redline MT90 is safe to use in 1500 standard gearbox or should I stick with the original spec ZC90 non EP? Any other recommendations would also be appreciated... many thanks and apologies if this has been covered many times before.

Hi Guy,

I changed my gearbox oil on the weekend and I purchase the ZC90 Tutela 80W-90 from Ricambo.
My 5 speed box took just under 3 litres to fill up, which cost me £38.16 including delivery , I had various different oils offered me by various places but decided to play safe and go with the oil recomended by Ricambo!

A good tip to make the job easier was to remove the back wheel and we used a clean grease gun with a rubber hose to fill up the gearbox, as you are unable to pour it straight from the tub!
Best of luck
Jon

Hi Jon,
Many thanks for the quick detailed reply. (Very impressed)
It's nice to know that I am not the only one who has been given possibly too many choices of oil which makes it very confusing..
I can see why you chose to go with ZC90 and I think I will end up going down the same route.
Nice tip regarding the filling.Cheers.
Thanks again for the info and advice.
Guy

The X1/9 gearbox doesn't like EP gear oils as the additives can affect some of the metals used on the internals, the synchros I think. Its really not easy to find none EP gear oil and so after much investigation I use 'classic type' mineral 20/50 engine oil, apparently its a common substitute. Its the right viscosity and a few hundred thousand Minis can't be wrong (they share the engine and gearbox oil) .
