Well hello everyone
yesterday we started on our lovely project and already have hit some snags. How does one remove the doors and associated parts inside, didn't want to un bolt the handle and window assemblies in case we did something wrong. Had an impact driver and a large pozi head but couldn't shift the hinge screws!!
Also how does the vinyl back trim behind the seats come off as it seems to be glued on, do you simple remove and glue back on later? Am assuming I need to do this to get to removing the rear window.
Parts required will be posted soon but need to passenger door and the nose cone section (if available)
many thanks Stephen

Hi Stephen,
First...are you doing a full restoration, or just taking bits off to tidy things up and then put back. The reason I ask this is because that's what I started to do and ended up doing a full restoration and I mean a full resto...right down to having my frame acid dipped.
The doors are surprisingly heavy, might I suggest you remove all the internals first as you might find it a bit of a task trying to loosen the screws with an impact driver. I had to in the end drill these screws out and use a special tool to remove the remaining bits.
Also the vinyl black trim behind the seats are glued, well I know mine was...the glue was so old it pealed off real easy. You don't need to remove this to remove the rear window. I found it easier to remove the rear window once I removed the engine mainly because I could stand in the engine bay, the work shop manual explains this well and putting it back in is just the reverse process be warned get help to put it back in.
Check out my thread.
Dave

Hi
Thank you for replying. I suspect a full restoration will ensue, it's already becoming an obsession. I tried to remove the window mech etc but stopped as wasn't sure of how it all went. The large head screws on the hinges seemed to be really tight!!
Yes the rear trim seems to be glued so I guess I will gently take this off.
Also are the electtrics easy to remove and then replace
I bought the Hayes book but for a layman like me it's very basic. Do you know if there is a more comprehensive one available?

Hi Stephen,
Take loads of pictures for reference I've taken hundreds and use them all the time (valuable resource). I have two manuals the early version and the latest, they are ok but taking your own pictures of everything you do will help you no end...
The door internals are easy to remove, but make sure you label everything and put them all together, you may find some of these items in poor condition and may not be worth putting back. Check Ebay there are loads of stuff on there. You can also take a look at X19spares web site, and check out Eurosport uk site.
The best way to check on the electrics, would be to use the diagram in the latest manual I photo copied these pages and sorted all the colour codes. I used a company called Autosparks they are very good fortunately for me they are only a couple of miles down the road from me so I was able to pop in. They supply every colour code you need...be warned check your wire stands before replacing.
Have a look at the first picture the bit to the left of the picture is the mess I found when I removed the electrics from the door the other side was the same. The second pic is a close up of the mess I had to sort. The third pic, well I'll let you figure that one out!!!!

Thank you so much. It all seems a bit daunting but I will follow you're advice. Found a new door on a Dutch website but it was over £600 wow!!!!

Stephen, how bad are your doors? I repaired mine they were very bad but sometimes you have to draw the line I made the panels welded them in place and had them stripped and dipped at pro-stip and they E plated them they wont rust by the time I've finished adding the paint, not quite finished these yet.
If you need any ref pictures let me know if I have them I'll post them.
The two bottom pictures one taken away by Pro-stip and one returned along with the doors front and rear boots I don't have pictures of those yet because they're wrapped in bubble wrap for now. The other pictures are the the doors.
