I'm close to finishing a restoration on my 1988 X1/9, and am in need of a replacement windscreen, mine has 3 fairly deep scratches caused by the passenger side wiper arm being worn and allowing part of the wiper assembly to rub on the screen creating these arc shaped scratches, i can feel them with my thumb nail so they are too deep to polish out.
As the car is not currently insured i can't get it replaced on the insurance and even if it was insured i'm not sure what the insurance companies stance on a deeply scratched screen would be? does it need to be cracked to qualify for replacement? claiming for a new windscreen a few weeks after starting an insurance policy would look slightly suspicious, so i think my only option is to find a good replacement and get it fitted.
If i can find a replacement from one of you kind folks is it a job for a professional windscreen person to remove old and fit new? Has anyone on this forum replaced a windscreen by themselves?
Thanks
Matt

It's an expensive thing to do without using the insurance...

Almost certain!
My car is being fitted with a screen tomorrow (Friday) by National Windscreens. I'll let you all know how it goes.
It is a Pilkington screen, and I had a terrible saga with Pilkington 5 years ago when trying to fit a new screen into my Lancia HPE. It just didn't fit. The shape was waaaaay out at the bottom corners. I tried every single one that was in the country, eventually fitting the one that was closest. The fitter said he'd never seen anything like it. The windscreen company tried to say my car was mis-shapen!!!! Lol. An IMMACULATE HPE. They said, "Ah, well, these old cars, y'see, they weren't built with modern accuracies... we often have to alter the shape of the aperture with a hammer or some pliers in the lip, just to get the screens fitting right." I said "It was built by a f'kin robot you idiot..." What a joke. That screen is still in that car and hasn't cracked, despite it being 'persuaded' to fit at the corners. Having said that, it's just sat in the garage and hasn't moved since it was fitted so... who knows, maybe the first pot hole and it'll crack!
And I read an old thread on here recently about exactly the same problem-

I wonder if their jigs are incorrectly stored...

Sat too far out at the bottom corners, mainly the left. They're going to bring another to try on Monday or Tuesday.
Pilkington...

Not good! Vibration transmitted straight to the screen is asking for trouble, although a thick bead of adhesive might prevent that I suppose.
