headlamp bulbs was created by mark dennis
Are there any headlamp bulbs that improve the existing without any rewire, relays etc.
I want to do it properly but not sure if a minor upgrade without major wiring would be worth doing
I have limitedish car electrical knowledge so would probably book a garage if needed for the a wiring upgrade
Thanks for any advice

I've always found replacing the standard Carello light units with Wipac Quadoptics with decent bulbs like Osram Nightbreakers makes a worthwhile improvement for about £50

Hi Kevin, what age is your car ?
If its an early one then you would benefit more from a new pair of lamps , new wiring connectors and bulbs, this is not an expensive upgrade like Mark has stated and can be bought as a kit which is a DIY job also, only two issues , if you go this route your headlamp alignment will need reset .
Due to the overloaded electrics on the x1/9 's I would advise you to have the relay wiring mod done , there are plenty of easily understood diagrams without the need to be an electrician or plenty of people here that can keep you right if you start the DIY route.
The later cars have got a relay on dip beams but the benefits of doing these mods are huge , even get the mods done first and see the improvement .
Hope this helps not confuses you .

Mine is a 1985 VS so don't know if this makes a difference in a re-wire or just a bulb change?
Thanks for your advice

Who needs 4th gear anyway...

Hi Mark
My 85 VS did not have relays on dipped beam and inserting a mini loom (without chopping any original wires) with a direct fused live from the battery improved the headlights a lot. My car still has original headlight units. It was like driving by candlelight before fitting the relays!
