here is the new amp, it cost £9
and here is the wiring I ordered, another fiver. On the left is the Aux flying lead, on the right is the 12v fag light power cable, which I ended up not using
because I used this instead, hard-wired in from an ignition-fed live and suitable fused

And here is it mounted in the glovebox
The second pic shows it with the flying lead exiting the rear of the glovebox via a 10mm hole I drilled. It runs down the back of the dash, under the centre console and pops up between the passenger seat & the handbrake.
The standard speakers are more than man enough. With the amp volume set to 5, it's more than adequate for roof-off motoring
