You could try a smaller steering wheel. Also, I have found the earlier dished shaped steering wheels allow you to get your knees up behind it easier.

I think it is possible to alter the angle of the steering wheel slightly by packing out the lower (nearer to the pedals) steering column mounting bolts.

I will be messing with my steering column tomorrow, so will have a look to confirm this.

Ok, below is a picture of my steering column with the plastic cowling removed and wiring moved out of the way..
Sadly the picture has rotated 90 degrees :(

If you remove the lower bolts (the ones furthest away from the steering wheel)and insert some washers in between the bracket on the steering column and the mounting bracket it is possible to alter the angle of the steering column and hence raise the height of the steering where.

You will also need to slacken the upper bolts as well to help with inserting washers.

It is worth noting that altering the angle by a degree or so will make quite a difference.

thanks Andy that is really helpful. i went down and had a look at it yesterday to tbh, currently I am waiting for screwfix to open though as i think i will fit slightly longer bolts at the back so i can raise it as high as i need with enough thread left to hold it properly. thanks for your help, it is really good to have a clear reference to show i'm not breaking something i shouldnt! I hhave removed the wheel from my older car too, just working out the horn system atm to see if swapping them over would be a good idea. cheers, chris

I finally did this mod today and thought I would take some pictures, I had my door off which made access slightly easier.

My intention was to use a hex M10 nut as a packer but after trying this I decided some penny washers would be better option, I stacked up 4 no. M6 penny washers which worked out as a 6mm spacer.

I measured the gap between the seat and the wheel before and it was about 13.5 cm and then after the mod it was about 15.5 cm, I found that the top column shroud was tight to the bottom of the dashboard.

I will see if this helps when I finally get around to driving my X19 B)

this is well worth it! with this, and fitting the earlier dished wheel I have plenty enough room, clutch rest removed as well so now my feet fit! would say that when i raised the centre column i used 4 2mm washers per side, so had to change to 25mm bolts but it was definitely worth it, when i get her running i can actually drive her now!

Another mod I have done is to cut off the seat runner stop (on the floor runner) this also allowed the seat to go back a bit further again B) another mod I can see me doing is to alter the seat base-take a chunk out of the metal and then alter the vinyl.
This will allow the seat to go back that little bit further again B) B) B) I hope?

Other than this I will have to have my legs shortened :P :P or worse still let my wife drive me every where!

Why do big people like small cars???! :P

I'll be doing this one in the near future.

At 6'3" and 16 stone, my car is "full" when I get in. It's comfy enough for the hour long commute (I take the X into work once a week) but a slightly raised steering wheel would help. And good call on the seat stop, that's going too!

If you do a search through the technical bits on the forum you will find over the years plenty of mods and ideas for the taller owner.
An idea that has been done is to move the position of the seat belt mounting 9behind the seat), then that would allow you to slide the seat further back. Also, you could take the spare wheel out as well thus giving a bit more room.

One more thought: earlier cars (up to about 1983) had the seat rails welded to the floor pan. Later cars have a cassette type sliding mechanism. This I think, makes the later seats sit slightly higher.

In a previous life I was involved with designing cabs and seating for diggers. It is amazing how just moving something a few millimeters can improve access and give more space.
