advice on electric window adjustment please

Hello.

I have a 1984 VS that has the early cable operated electric windows. It looks like the manual mechanism with an electric motor added. I have just had the windows out of the doors for restoration. Having put them back, the driver's door window will not go up without you pulling it at the same time. I even replaced the electric motor which made no difference.

Is there some trick to getting the window mechanism properly set-up so that it works OK?

Any suggestions gratefully welcomed.

Paul

I got the window working now. The cable needs to be carefully adjusted so that it pulls both ends of the window equally. Still rather on the slow side but at least I don't need to park-up to pull the window up with one hand whilst pressing the switch with the other.

The windows on my 85 are hilariously slow - its quite a talking point with people. and they make a very 80's 'power window' noise. Not sure which mechanism I have.

Sometimes the passenger side stops completely and needs a helping hand.

I have improved one by aligning it after the steel which holds the glass rusted away.
I think there might be a relay mod on xweb?

Your car is a rare colour scheme. Was that two tone scheme only made for one year? Eventually I will return my roof to metallic light blue as it was originally.

Who needs 4th gear anyway...

Hi Jeremy,

I have one fast window and one slow window. I worry about the slow one burning out the motor. We might have the same mechanism. You will recognise it by the removable discs on the door trims that allow you to insert a manual winding handle should the electrics give up. As we have owned our car from new, I still have the handle, a strange black device with a gear wheel on the end.

Our 1984 VS came in two colour ways, I think, but I cannot remember the other one. A year or so later the split on the two tone paintwork was moved higher up the body to just below the bonnet and window line. I prefer my one.

Well you learn something everyday.
Slightly off topic but I had never spotted that there were two different levels of 2 tone split, a high line and a low line, very interesting.

Yup!

High-line - www.carandclassic.co.uk/uploads/cars/fiat/5625926.jpg

Low-line like mine - www.carstyling.ru/resources/studios/1972...ne_Fiat_X_1_9_03.jpg

I didn't realise but perhaps mine is a bit of rarity.

It is a rarity indeed! I would have preferred a single colour X but after buying mine I really got into the 80's vibe. I am considering painting my Tron wheels with plastidip style peel off paint to compliment the gold pinstripe on my car.

I do have the covers on the door trims but Alas no emergency handle. They must be pretty rare. I think mine were probably poorly assembled after a respray in 1993! The paint is still pretty good though. I will have to try and adjust the passenger side.

My first X1/9 was a red and grey VS and I loved it so much I'm currently looking for another one, as you say, very 80s!
I'll be buggered if I'm paying these silly prices though.
