Won't start was created by Jon Griffiths
Hi,

I have tried to start my 1500cc 83 X19 engine today after 10 years in hibernation and still no joy
After flattening the battery about 10 + times,I decided to try towing it to start her, we had lots of smoke and back firing but still no go??
The engine ran perfectly prior to being pulled out to repair the rusty bay and has only had a new cam belt and general tidy up, could it be the timing out??

I tried to check this today and when the crank pulley is at TDC and the camshaft is lined up on the pointer the dizzy rotor arm points to no.4 contact in the cap, even the marks on the flywheel line up correctly , how do I tell if it's 180 out, and how is the best way to correct it and try again??

Any help would be appreciated :) I have looked at so many different websites and are now even more confused than I was before :(
Thanks
Jon

Hi Steve,

Yep thought about that one and drained the tank completely and tried with 2 new gallons of fuel, I have had the same on a friend's boat engine once!

Thanks, will go back to the garage later today and go through the static timing settings again.

Cheers Jon

If you think you are 180 degrees unclamp and lift up the dizzy just enough to rotate the rotor arm around 180 degrees and try again. Or if unsure take the cam cover off and make sure both valves are shut when the timing marks line up. I would have thought the rotor arm should point at number one when timing up the engine

The timing should be set up with the rotor arm pointing to cylinder 4. (This should be marked on the distributor)
With the timing belt cover removed if you crank the engine round so that the cam shaft is at the TDC mark, then the mark on the crank should also be pointing at the marker and if you look at the window on the bell housing it should be at 5 deg. before TDC.

I all the marks line up then you may need to slacken the distributor clamp and just turn it slightly.

Have you checked the condition of the plugs, leads and distributor cap?

The pics below show the marks and pointers that need to be lined up.

Rob/Charlie-Thanks all for the helpful information provided I will check the timing etc. tomorrow evening, I may also remove the Cam cover to check that the valves are closed/open at the correct Time as the pistons are at TDC!

Andy-Thanks for the reply, I can confirm all the ignition components (cap, leads, etc) are brand new and I am on my second set of plugs (just in-case the first set were too wet with all the petrol :( )
I have Also re-fitted the original Luminition Kit that came with the car originally and can confirm this is all operating correctly and sparking at each plug??

the only thing I need to check is the markings on the flywheel as the Mark I thought was the correct Marking maybe a drill mark for balancing the fly wheel??

I will let you know how I do, otherwise its going on the back of my friends recovery truck Saturday morning to his Garage so he and his 70 year old Dad can hopefully fix it for me :) Although it would give me great pleasure to tell him I fixed it myself :) :)

thanks again JonG

Hi All,

Thanks for all the help with the Timing issue's, after going through all the information supplied I can confirm my cam belt was set up correctly. I had to move the distributor a fair way to line up when set at 5 degrees!
Then with a fully charged battery the engine started and ran after a second attempt, just got to put everything back together then set the timing with a strobe
