1981 "barn find" rescued from crusher

I was looking for some parts for a 1980 car I recently rescued and on EvilBay I came across this 1981 car in an unusual colour Arancio Metallico 902. Upon looking at photos from the seller's previous listings I realised this car was rather too good to take to bits. So after a brief correspondence a very good price including delivery was agreed. Unfortunately when the car arrived I realised it was missing a lot more parts than I had seen in the photos :( . It was missing all of its interior and dash, rear lights and engine lid. Now I know why the price seemed good! Thankfully all the body coloured stuff - boot lid, bonnet and doors were still on it.

Photo taken after I had fitted some replacement lights.

Brown dash in place.

Some rust in the nose cone gutter and offside wing top.

I have decided to give the car a "1300" style with quarter bumpers and ladder stripes.

Rust-free windscreen frame and scuttle.

Rust-free Targa bar too!

Good find, what's the plan with it?

First thing is to get it MOTd, I don't think it needs any bodywork repairs to achieve that, just mechanicals. I might sell it to a genuine enthusiast who will bring it back to its former glory, but then again I really like it and have just bought a 1300 bumper conversion kit for it!

I noticed the gearbox has a plastic metal patch right by the l/h CV joint, so I presume the CV joint made a bid for freedom at some time and damaged the gearbox case. I have a few spare cases!

This weekend if weather allows I will look at that gearbox and the brakes.

Thanks Jeremy. The car needs some non-structural repairs but it really is much too good to break. Updates will depend on how much trolling I have to put up with!

Looking forward to updates on this one Rachael. This should be a walk in the park compared to the other projects you have on the go

Thus far I have sorted out the electrics, fitting relays to the dipped beam, ignition supply and starter to take the loads off the switches. I also had a go at fitting readily available and cheap aftermarket headlight bowls. The headlight pods are very snug and some mods were needed to fit the Wipac plastic bowls that I used. The bowls have to be rotated so that the beam adjusters are at the 20 past 8 positions as you look at them...

Because the bowls have been rotated, the new headlights will need to be modified so they can be set properly upright. Normally they have locating tags so you can't fit them wrongly in the bowls - these tags have to be partly flattened or removed.

To adjust the beam, up/down aim is altered by turning both adjusters together in the same direction (clockwise down, anticlockwise up), left/right aim is done by turning the adjusters in opposite directions together. This procedure will be familiar to anyone who has used a dumpy level or theodolite!

I have a few of these 8 way blade fuse holders removed from my Montecarlo rewire, two of these will replace the OEM ceramic fuse holder tomorrow.

These fuseboxes are available from various auto electrical suppliers.
