I think you might have to completely strip, clean and use an overhaul kit on your carb. Blowing out the jets will not be sufficient for a carb that's been sitting around a long time. This probably needs doing anyway and it's money well spent. If this cures the basic problem, a quick rolling road tune up will pay dividends. Good luck.

This is what I was thinking it would come to, yes. If clearing out the carb airways doesn't work, I will have one last go at fiddling with the mixture screws (any stock settings for screws people have would be great) and if not then I will just buy a refurb kit!

Progress!

Cleaned jets (again) and cleaned all the airways into the carb. Engine now responds wonderfully to wide open throttle and sounds great. It even idled for a few minutes! Still work to do with tuning but I am hoping I'm on to something

Congratulations! The carb will very probably benefit from a proper overhaul. Have you got the metal exhaust manifold heat shield and thick plastic carb tray all present and correct?

Not sure about the manifold heat shield but the insulator tray is there, it just has the corner cracked off (none of the gasket coverage is compromised though). Didn't manage to work on that today as I was working on the brakes; one of the 10 or so previous owners saw nothing dangerous about bodgy shortcuts on the brakes... Because apparently a screw jammed into the hole where a bleed nipple should be does the trick...

I have read about a clever trick to allow continued use of a caliper with snapped bleed nipple on here. Involving a union banjo or something with a new bleed nipple in it, on the connection of the brake hose... I think it happens quite often... no excusing the screw though!

Who needs 4th gear anyway...

It's worse than I thought. The person had in fact drilled into the where the bleed screw goes... right through into the caliper housing! That's clearly why he had to seal off the bleed nipple. So what I have now is a useless, unserviceable rear caliper and a potential £100 bill for a new one. Looks like the carb overhaul will have to wait :(

Hi Jeff, have you thought of getting the hole plugged off and then using the hose with banjo bolt.It may be worth a try and could be cheaper?Just a thought.
Regards,
John

Which side caliper do you need Jeff? I might have one you can have. Is the other side caliper ok?

John - my understanding of that is that the banjo bolt becomes the new bleed valve as opposed to that inside the caliper? If so it seems like a good easy fix!

Charles - Will upload a photo at some point today.

Rachael - Drivers (RHD) side rear, and the passenger side seems to be in order but will obviously check all corners as a matter of course, given that one of the owners apparently couldn't be trusted with brake calipers... If the banjo bolt suggestion for any reason doesn't work I would be interested in what calipers you have at hand!
