Alternator removal was created by Keith Waterhouse
Hello All,
I’d be pleased if you could help me out with this one. I’m trying to remove my alternator; I’ve removed the belt and slackened it off. However, I can’t remove the long bolt that passes through it as there isn’t enough space between it and the bodywork. Should this bolt have been put in the other way round with its head facing the exhaust pipe where it could be easily be taken out? I’m not sure what to do now other than to try and cut the bolt. Any comments / advice would be most welcome.
Thank you
Keith Waterhouse

Hi Keith,
I've just checked on my car and the bolt is facing towards the exhaust down pipe.
There is a hexagonal recess in the other side (bodywork side)where the nut should sit.
If you can't get the bolt out it does make you wonder how it was got in there in the first place??
Also, didn't manage to check, but isn't there a plastic cover in the wheel arch that can be removed to give access to the alternator bolt?
Good luck.
Andy

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your post. I’ve taken my wheel off to check if there’s an access opening but there isn’t, so I’ll make a start on trying to cut the bolt.
Regards
Keith

If it's of help I have no problem removing the long bolt towards the bodywork. You have to remove the plastic guard to get access. If it's not been removed for a while then the combination of rusty fixings and brittle plastic might make it a once only job, no big loss if it does get broken

Hi,
I see what you mean now about the plastic guard, I'd been looking for a access hole that the bolt would pass through. I can't do much more today as I need an extension bar for my small socket set in order to reach some of the screws that hold the guide in place.
Thanks
Keith

Hi,
I’ve managed to get the pivot bolt out like you suggested but now the alternator is trapped and won’t come out either upwards or downwards. It looks like removing part of the exhaust pipe will be my best option.
Regards

There is a metal shield bolted on underneath the alternator which can be removed.
If my memory serves me correct, you can then try and wiggle the alternator round 90 degrees (so that the pulley is at the top) and lower it to the ground.
Also, if you have the plastic guards removed and the rear wheel access is better.
It is a bit of a fiddle and plenty of bad language is required
You shouldn't need to remove the exhaust to do this and I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Thanks guys,
I’ve now got my alternator out, it came out upwards. I had to move a hose clip near the water pump and take off the heat shield over the exhaust manifold which was a job in itself due to two rusty nuts and studs. There wasn’t enough space to take it downwards as my car has a non-standard exhaust pipe and this restricts access down below. Thanks again.
