Hi all
Had a good look over the X19 I got off facebook. It looked like someone as rebuilt the engine and put in a new set of pistons. Put some WD40 down the cylinders and got the engine turning over free and easy. Put a new battery and fresh petrol in it. Spins over on the starter spot on but no attempt to fire. Checked for spark and have a good one. After a bit of playing thought I wonder if its 180 degress out. Swapped the leads round and immediatly got backfiring through carb. Loosened distributor and moved it a bit but still the same.
So I have it blowing back but no attempt to fire. Anyone out there got any thoughts.
Regards
Rich

If it is backfiring through the carb then you have it about 180 degrees out and it *is* firing. If you have fuel and spark then the only thing missing is compression... either that or your timing is so far off as to render the 180 degree option pointless...
Assume you have got fuel and compression then go through the timing set up from scratch, adjusting the distributor will have meant that you need to do this anyway.
Get the timing set and then look at the fuelling - best guess is you have fuel but not enough of it

Maybe dirty old fuel too, clean the jets out and give it another go.also check to make sure the choke isnt stuck and that the fuel pump is delivering enough fuel and maybe try chucking some fuel direct into the carb

Hi all
Took the cam belt cover off and set the timing to TDC for no4 cylinder and the timing mark on the camshaft pulley is pointing roughly to the 4 oclock position not to the mark on the engine mount. So it looks like the camshaft is miles out. The rotor arm was pointing to the correct position.
Now another question. Can I just take the belt off and turn the camshaft to the correct position as it sits or do I have to take the head off to re set it.
Thanks for all you help I am going to need plenty of it before we are back on the road.
