Best new tyres for X1/9?

I need to put a set of new tyres on my 1988 car (has the standard 'cheesecutter' wheels). Lots of 'budget' tyres available, but nothing for 13-inch wheels that seems in any way sporty or more of a premium tyre (in 165/70 SR13 guise, anyway).

What would you recommend? I'm wondering about Toyo 350s, which seem to have fairly decent reviews.

Look at mytyres.co.uk - there are at present 87 different tyres in the factory size, ok a lot of them are budget ones but there are a few more expensive ones so I am sure you will be able to find something there. I got a set of Nankangs about 7 years ago for like £30 per corner and they've been superb!

First time I have ever heard of Nankangs being described as good.

They are usually referred to as the iconic ditch finders.

However if they suit the exxxy all good.

You probably won't find a better choice of decent tyres, or price, here

If you ditch the standard size in favour of 185/60 tyres, there are some good ones out there. I like the Yokohama A539's. Have a look on the Black Circles website. The fatter tyres will give you better grip and better braking too. And they look far better then the 165/70's too.

Also liking Yokohamas have used these for many years. Not the best for high mileage but am only doing a couple of thousand miles each year so tyres need changing every 5 or 6 years. :) :)
This way no chance of having old hard 10 year old tyres that have good tread but tyres well past their best.
Have bought 2 this year from Black Circles the new BluEarth 165x70x13 with promise of high mileage.. :)

Nowt wrong with Nankangs, as with a lot of stuff they seem to have come a long way. I remember when Yoko's were total cack, look at 'em now

Horses for courses. Depends on the car and its performance plus how your budget is but I recently switched the tyres on the wifes modern Fiat from a Mid-range tyre to some premium ones and could not believe the difference in ride quality and noise. It actually felt like I had changed some suspension components it was that much better. If you can afford it I would always get quality rubber.......... My 1300 is currently on Uniroyals but I still like Pirelli's - yes not that hard-wearing but grip well. As per Rob though Toyo's are a decent buy

Metallic Green 1300 Serie Speciale - Bertone
Fiat Coupe 20VT LE - Pininfarina
Lotus Turbo Esprit HC - Giugiaro
