X1/9 1300 for sale was created by Chris Lopez-Smith
Where to start. I had been looking for a decent 1300 within my budget for about 8 years. I spotted a green 1300 on eBay, went to see the chap in Cardiff in June last year. It hadn't been off the road for a while, it ran fine, I checked the inner and outer sills, suspension turrets, front and rear boots, all the usual X1/9 weak points and decided to go for it. Admittedly I had not had it inspected and was buying it at risk. I had it towed home to near Brighton. It sat in a Permabag cover/car cover until I found time to find a garage to recommission it, get it back to it's former glory (a few weeks ago). I had been buying squllions of new parts from Eurosport, DG Rally, X1/9 Spares, Henk Martens etc. in preparation, a carb rebuilt, a second set of wheels refurbished with new tyres, seats reupholstered.
This is where it goes a bit wrong. The garage had
a long job list - cambelt change, all new brakes etc. They called me the next day to express their absolute horrors as to what lurked underneath - I had to go and see it on the ramp for myself.
They pointed out very several iffy repairs with copious amounts of pop rivetted plates, no-more-nails glue, fibreglass, lashings of thick underseal, and there were one or two areas of serious corrosion in places you would need a ramp to spot. In their opinion the car would be a deathtrap as it is, structurally unsound, and while it could possibly be repaired it would take the brave. Without a doubt I filled up my portable swear box, the garage mechanics came up with "The absolute rotters !" which make me laugh (through the tears !). It was clearly not sold as described !
I am currently judging interest by offering it as a complete car for brave repair or for spares. I am open to any questions, advise too. I have loads of photos of the good and bad bits
I also have a number of new, refurbished and secondhand spares which I now don't need. I will post these separately. If there is anything you’re are looking for please ask.
Regards, Chris

Really sorry to hear that Chris - I wanted to do the same as you but was warned by Nick Troth (P1X 2000) that virtually all the 1300s are rot boxes. Hence we're currently doing a 1300 recreation using a 1500 solid body shell. Hope the sale goes well.

Thanks for your empathy. As you can imagine I am thoroughly gutted by the situation. Nick's advice seems to be spot on - if only I knew this before. I will pop Nick a message to see what he suggests.
It seems that you are pursuing the best way. I will put some thought to doing the same.

Hi Chris, haven't been on the forum for a wee while so only just picked up this thread. So sorry to read about you being ripped off, there are some horrible people out there. For what it's worth, I had one of the original left hand drive 1300 exxys which I bought (second hand)way back in 1976. I was in the RAF at the time and posted to RAF Bruggen in Germany. I went to the Ford garage to look at buying a Mk 2 Escort but there was a lime green X1/9 which I had no idea existed. I bought the car without even driving it (!), had it registered with British Forces Germany and drove it for five years until it fell apart from rust. I had got posted back to RAF Lossiemouth in 1978 and continued to use the car all year round, which meant lots of road salt over the winter....which probably killed the car. They did appear to be made of old coke cans so I suppose the chance of getting a decent one nowadays is slim! However great memories of a superb little car which made me very happy during it's short life. I naw have a 1985 VS....which I am trying to sell. But that's another story.

Hi Peter. Thank you for your message. I haven't been on here in a while.
Your story about going to a garage to buy an Escort and coming away with an X1/9 made me smile !
I absolutely agree these are cracking little cars - my dream was to own a usable 1300 but it's not to be (yet at least).
Good luck with selling your VS.
Regards Chris
