My X19 For Sale £375 - Now no longer for sale
Indicators, Hazard lights, pop up headlamps, interior lamps, fibre optics, cigarette lighter are all not working. Everything else works just fine bar a hot starting problem and the carb cooling fan, oh, and radiator fan.
The only rust problem I can see is a strange tear about 1.5CM long on the lower part of the rear o/s suspension turret, but an MOT tester would have to be a real sod to fail it on that, and some non structural rust on the n/s rear wheelarch, visable from within the rear boot. There is also some minor corrosion on the inside of the car where the front bottom corner of the door frame is on top of the sill.
Drives very nicely indeed, but has a weak 3rd gear syncro, but blipping the throttle when changing down solves this.

That is very kind of you indeed, but you must be a genius to fix the electrics! Here is what I have worked out so far:
The radiator fan is down to the sender which I have a spare for
The interior lights, I guess is down to split wires in the door hinges as the bulbs are OK.
The hazard lights: I have no idea.
The indicators: I broke these somehow when I removed the plug from the hazard light switch.
The carb fan: I am not too worried about.
The hot starting problem: I think has something to do with the ballast resistor but I dont know. I guess the carb cooler not working is not helping.
The headlamp motors: Did work briefly, a bit (like, both would come up and only one would come down, but now, notning happens.
The horn: The relay clicks but only when the steering wheel is at certain angles, and a new horn is still not working at all even when relay clicks.
All the best, and if you did want to help out I would happily pay you for your troubles!
Adam

In all seriousness though, doesnt this thread show how valuable owners clubs are? How many people would have just sold the car, like Adam was going to when there are genuinely decent people out there willing to help.
On that note, if anyone near Ayr needs a hand with their X1/9 give me a shout!

Sadly this too will be my swansong as far as the club is concerned, my membership expires in a few days. If anyone would like my assistance in future, make a note of my telephone number on the Contacts page; it won't be there much longer.
Cheers R

I cleaned up all earth trees on the car. Changed the flasher unit, changed the redundant plug to be the plug that goes into the hazard light button (I have no idea how the indicators ever worked with the wrong connector plugged in!) I guess the now redundant connector would be for front fog lamps if it had them...
I guess the headlamp raise and lower is not MOT important but it would be very nice to have them working as they look cool and would save petrol on a long run in the day. I have got it so the right hand side one goes up when you turn the lights on, but neither come down. I know both motors work as when wired up incorrectly they just continually go up and down.
I will be taking it for an MOT early August, and look forward to many happy miles to come! I think I was in a bad mood last night when everything seemed to go wrong and I felt quite disheartened.

Headlamps will need to be up so they can check the alignment.
If they are going up and down I'd try swapping the relays about. Electric windows aircon etc. have the same relay.
Failing that, disconnect the motor relays and manually wind them to the 'up' position.
The MOT tester has to test the car in the condition it is presented so if the lights are permenantly up as long as they switch on and off and point the right way its a pass!
Have a look at my X1/9 project thread here...

Plenty messing about with wiring there! LOL!

The way I got my indicators to work today was to remove the flasher unit, wire up one of the interior lamps to the radio earth, and check for a positive at the flasher unit...Nothing, and it was at this point that I noted the colours of wires going to the flasher unit corresponded to the "redunadant" connector that was not connected to the hazard light switch. Sure enough when plugging that in instead, I had a live. Plugged in flasher - Hazards
