Numbers, numbers

I am a total newb when it comes to Fiats and I'd like some direction on a basic primer on these cars, starting with the X1/9. I've read several websites on these cars and have learnt the basics of dimensions, specs and so on. I've also found sites that list beginning chassis/serial numbers.

But I need help with something even more basic. Where are all of these numbers on the vehicles? I'm in Canada and recently looked at a '79 imported from the U.S. The only number I could find on the car was on the plastic plate riveted to the driver's door jamb. No vin number in the windshield area, none in the front trunk, or the rear trunk. Are their numbers to be found on the engine itself, and if so, where might they be? Would engine numbers match up to chassis numbers?

Thanks in advance for any help!
