Similarly, ride a 600 sports bike for a while and then see if the Exxy can compare in performance

Bruce - dont worry black cabs don't intimidate me... if they clip me they can say goodbye to their wing-mirror....

Geoff - good to see you posting again! Thanks for the comments, yeah I'm in the process of doing a deal for an Aprilia RS125! just gotta claw together some funds, hence all the things I'm trying to flog in the for sale forum at the moment! :) As for my reason wanting a bike, the main reason is they look cool and I want the speed kicks! :) but yeah I can definitely see the benefit of using it for those quick trips locally where if I was in one of my cars the car would barely have warmed up and hence be wasting petrol and obviously have the hassle of finding somewhere to park!

Cheers,
Jim.

Nice one Alex..................ditto - have recently splashed on........wait for it........a Piaggio moped! (ahem!)
Yes it is italian - and true to italian tradition it rode fine for FOUR miles - then lost power!!! Despite all my efforts since - (stripping carb, checking ignition, compression etc) havent been able to get it to rev above about 2k rpm, so it is currently in my local dealers workshop, and at £35p.h. am hoping wont be there long!!! In the meantime its back to the pushbike. :x
Still the exxy just needs a bit of wiring and the interior to do now - hooray - the end is nigh!!!!)

Just thought I would update on this thread - finally picked up my RS125 yesterday... spent ages looking for a really nice clean one that hadn't been dropped or thrashed by some chav... eventually found a lovely 2001 model year one with only 1,500 miles on the clock in mint condition which I snapped up!

I had an interesting journey home, I kept stalling it to start with when trying to pull away in 1st, the clutch biting point is SO different from the 4 stroke Suzuki GN 125 I learnt in which didn't need much revs but this Aprilia you really have to be vicious with the revs in comparision and let out the clutch slowly or it wheelies! :) its so, SO quick for a 125.

Finally got the hang of it and have been taking advantage of the nice weather yesterday and today and have been riding it all over the place! Just done well over 100 miles and still have a big smile on my face! :D only problem is my wrists and hands are aching like mad, its hurting even to type out this post....

Only downside is that I'm amazed by the stupidity of pedestrians and cars alike when it comes to motorcycles... :( had a Toyota Avensis which swung into my lane and I had to take evasive action and also so many pedestrians stepping out right into the road in front of me, - its not like the roar of my 2 stroke engine at 10,000 revs can't be heard.....! !

Ah, heres hoping next weekend is as bright as this one! 8)

ps Geoff - hope you got your scooter sorted!

Good to see you "biked" up Jim! Yeah 2 strokes do need plenty revs and dont tick over as smoothly as 4`s, but pound for pound, you get more power than an equivalent 4 stroke, (but worse consumption). Perhaps I will pop round on my moped to eyeball your new toy - we could even go for a ride together!- (if you can either tolerate sticking to 35mph, or waiting for me to catch up!) (Or perhaps I will stick my BSA together to show you a "proper" bike -i.e. loads of leaks, breakdowns etc, -tee hee!)
Perhaps I could arrange an X1/9 O.C. (bike division)LSE pub meet and we could admire Alex`s vespa! Anyway turns out the carb on my Piaggio is shot. The body of the carb is disentegrating with the flow of petrol and depositing aluminium dust into the mixture - probably as a result of it standing - albeit in a lock-up - for along time before I bought it. Currently have a new Dellorto on order, which should sort it. I`m told (by my local bike racing mechanic) use of Redex together with a friction reducer such as slick 50, ZX1, or wynns gold etc in a 2 stroke is well worth it, and prevents such horrors - so have purchased said products
ready to bung in as soon as I fit new carb. Just a thought but what do others think?

Yep Geoff - biking is brilliant fun and I really don't know why I didn't bother to take it up earlier.... its so satisfying being able to do something a lot of people cannot do! Indeed these two stroke animals are right banshees, my Aprilia apparantley wrings 33HP out of its measly 124 cc engine!! already had it up to 90 MPH (on my long private driveway of course ossifer)... You're more than welcome to come round and have a butchers at it soon!
A breakaway LSE X1/9 bikers splinter group sounds a good idea! :)
Cheers,
Jim.
