Redundant carb cooling fan idea

Hi all,

I haven’t done anything with this but thought it might be interesting to discuss.
Now I have removed the old air filter housing and replaced it with a smaller Ramair filter, I’ve nothing to connect the carb cooling hose to.
I think the consensus of opinion was that it wasn’t needed.
I know many people remove the fan unit completely to improve access but I had a thought!
Has anyone utilised this fan unit to be manually operated by a switch so it can move air around the engine bay when hot?
It may be a rubbish idea on my part and I’m not sure why I had the idea but I’d be interested in anyone’s thoughts.

Hi Gareth,
Yes, wiring a switch into the circuit to be able to manually switch the fan on has been done before.
Back in the day, my first X1/9 had this mod on it.

I have a K&N air filter on mine. Obviously the fan cowl can't bolt onto this as per the original.
However, I have cable tied it in place to be able to get the air flow over the carb. I have left my car as standard, so needs the cooling fan.
Also, the breather hose for the sump has it's own filter fitted, again, due to not having the connection on the K&N.

That’s really interesting Andy!
I thought my idea might be pants!
I still have the wiring connector for the cooling fan attached to the spade connectors on what I guess is the temperature sensor on the carb.
I’m not sure if it ever triggers the fan anymore so suggested the manual switch.
Does yours just trigger when hot as standard?

Yes, my fan works as standard, so when the engine is turned off after a run the fan cuts in when the temperature rises.
It keeps cutting in an out until then temperature has been brought down.
For my earlier car, the fan switch was wired into the circuit. So that the fan still worked off the thermostat as standard, but you could switch the fan on when sitting in traffic.
The only thing to remember is that you need to switch it off otherwise it will drain your battery if you forget!
However, if you have gone for electronic ignition, then you can do away with the fan circuit. If you are sitting in traffic and the temperature rises then the radiator fan should kick in. I find just increasing the revs slightly increases the flow of coolant around the circuit and brings the temp down anyway.

My car still has a carburettor cooling fan which operates automatically as Fiat designed.
It also has an override switch which can turn the fan on at any time the driver decides things may be geting too hot in the engine bay. It's mounted on custom made panel which also holds the non-standard manual choke control located between the seats on the engine bay bulkhead.
I have an electric fuel pump which lessens to problem of hot starts because of fuel vaporistion, the fan does make a good mounting point for the pump though.

This is an interesting avenue to pursue. I also have a carb engine with electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump.
I’d like to explore either operating it manually with a switch that is in keeping with the centre console or maybe linking it to come on when the radiator fans come on.
I’m no auto electrician however!…..LOL

Well.....I finally got around to completing the mod. The thought of doing it was worse than actually doing it as it only took around 2 hours with a little faffing.
Installed an additional centre console button so I can toggle the fan on or off and direct some additional cool air over the carb body when needed.
My last run out was a bit funny. Car runs fab but then after and hour, wouldn't idle again.
I wasn't sure if it was heat related. The run out before that, I accidently stalled it when at full temperature and had trouble re-starting from a hot start.
I'm wondering if having the fan on cooling the carb when at full temp is a good thing to do.....it shouldn't have to be though should it.

I found the fan a waste of time. Opening up the engine lid by removing sections, replacing with mesh and removing the mesh from the side scoops works. The Ferraris of the time did this.
An electric fuel pump, Hardi are good, keeps the fuel cool. I have lots of videos explaining on Youtube. David Moult. The Real David Moult.

I thought it was the electric petrol pump that made the fan not essential?
Unsure what the connection between electronic ignition and hot starting is?
