Radiator cooling fan direction? was created by Gareth Lloyd
Hi All,
Does anyone know for certain which direction the radiator cooling fan works?
Does it pull air in from the front of the car and drag it through to inside the car or does it push air from inside through to the outside?
Thanks,
Gaz.

Okay, so I posed the question to Marshall on his Youtube channel "GarageTimeTV" that I follow.
He has confirmed that the cooling fan on the X1/9 sucks air into the car through the radiator.
I know that many of you have mentioned that the X1/9 cooling system is more than adequate but I am doing a lot of work to mine and wanted to give it an upgrade.
I have a new radiator and new twin fans so I just wanted to ensure they were directing the air flow in the correct direction.
I have also invested in brand new rubber pipes and a lower triggering thermostat from Claire at EurosportUK. I think that with these and a good flush through, the worry about sitting in stationary traffic won't be as bad!

The secret to a good cooling system and this cannot be stressed enough, is either having a re-cored radiator or a new radiator.
Regular flushing of the system and the correct 50-50 mix with anti freeze and the X1/9 cooling system is more than adequate for keeping the car cool.
Replacing the hoses will help as well.
I'm not convinced two fans are required or will give you any better cooling than standard, but it will be interesting to see how it affects the cooling.
I wasn't sure whether the fan was a puller or pusher? Hence I didn't reply earlier, but thanks for confirming its a puller.

Yes….totally Andy.
I’m flushing through, fitting new hoses and jubilee clips and a new fan thermostat as well as the new aluminium radiator. I’m hoping the twin fans will give it that little extra boost.
It’s nearly 40 years old so deserves a treat!

So, after a good day, I’ve managed to wrestle in the new aluminium radiator with twin fans, attach the new pipework and wire up the temp sensor and fan supplies.
Needed a little fettling as I knew but wasn’t too bad.
I took the opportunity to spray up the underside with black stone chip paint before refitting. (Photos were the first coat!)
Just the rear hoses now.
I did however have a strange moment. I’m guessing that the two main metal pipes in the centre are the main flow and return. When I disconnected one hose, brown water came out as I suspected. When I disconnected the other one, clean water with coolant in it came out. I expected it all to be brown. I’m now wondering if there was a blockage somewhere?

Well......final update!
After fitting the new aluminium twin fan radiator, new hoses, replacing the old factory clips with jubilee clips and filling up the system, all is brilliant.
Twin fans kicking in lovely and I'm now a lot more relaxed in stationary traffic!
Completed a classic car charity run the weekend of around 150 miles without a hiccup!
(....and I can now access the bleed screw to the radiator with ease as it's a better type!)
One happy bunny!
