CV joint into transmission leak advice was created by Gareth Lloyd
Hi Guys,
I'm after some more advice!
I was just at the point where I thought I was getting somewhere. I've completed the new discs and pads to the rear but found quite an aggressive leak.
The leak is transmission oil and I'm 99% sure it's coming from the right hand longer driveshaft CV joint going into the transmission.
Has anyone ever replaced a seal in there and could give me some pointers?
I see EurosportUK do a CV joint kit.
So I guess it's a partial drain down of transmission oil first.
Is it a simple case of unscrewing all of the Allen bolts from the flange and it comes away?.....there isn't a ton of information in the Haynes manual.
Thanks in advance,
Gaz.

......after emailing Claire from EurosportUK, the problem sounds like it could very well be a failing differential oil seal. (Quite common after an oil change)
I will need to look into the procedure of removing the CV joint from the differential/gearbox and accessing the oil seal.
It seems I have a later design which means I have CV joints and not Universal Joints on the differential.
It has the Allen bolts around it......again, if anyone has done this before and can offer advice, it would be gratefully recieved!

....in the spirit of adding information to the forum and they say that a faint heart never won a fair maid, I'm almost ready to just go for it.
After trying to gain as much knowldege possible, I've crudely sketched out roughly what I think I'll encounter. (Sketch attached!)
I'm hoping to remove all of the Allen bolts from the offending CV joint. This will allow me to move it to one side.
This will expose the "stub shaft" which will need to be removed with a slide hammer. (I've purchased one with a three arm claw type on the end to grip the stub shaft)
There maybe an additional plate to remove but I'm not sure yet.
Once the stub shaft is removed, this should expose the oil seal ring which will need to be pulled out. (I've bought a clamp type seal ring remover tool)
Tap in the new lubricated oil seal ring with socket of the appropriate size and reassemble.
Sounds a breeze doesn't it........gulp!

Well, from out of left field, Mark from X1/9 Australia has suggested a much simpler procedure!
By unbolting the two bottom bolts on the McPherson strut and allowing the control arm to drop, this should create enough play to pull the whole haft shaft out of the diff.
This will avoid having to replace the torqued bolts to the stub shaft as it'll come out also.
If there is still not enough space, just unbolt the control arm and there will definately be enough then.
Going to try that first!

Hi Gareth,
I've never had to do this job, so can't really comment on it.
However, it might be worth giving Nick Troth at P1X a call for advice with this. it's highly likely he will have undertaken this task and might be able to give you some pointers.
Also, a write up of the task for the club mag would be much appreciated
Cheers
Andy

Thanks Andy.....and yes, I've struggled to get a definitive guide on how to do this specific task.
The Haynes manual is a bit sketchy with not much detail.
I will try and take a few photos and make note of what I'm doing so anyone doing this in the future will have something to reference.
Claire from EurosportUK has suggested that it's quite common to change the transmission oil and to then get a leak.
The old oil is probably thicker and the newer oil a lot thinner finding it's way through old hardened rubber seals.
I guess there's an argument of just leaving things alone but I changed the oil to Redline MTL and here we are!

......Holy Cow!
I thought I'd give you all an update of where I am.
As most of you know, I'm in construction and not a mechanic so am learning more and more about the X1/9 by just getting stuck in.
I finally completed the leaking oil seal ring to the diff/CV joint on the drivers side.....It's not a job for the faint hearted!
I will do a write up later because after spending money on specific tools to tackle this job, I discovered that I needn't have bothered!
I will elaborate on this later should anyone want to tackle this job.
All I need to do now is to torque down the 6 CV joint bolts.
As I have the transmission drained down, it seems madness to not tackle passenger side with the shorter haft shaft.
I did start today but can you believe it......one of the CV joint bolts was rounded off so I've had to order a bolt remover.
Hopefully, one more Saturday will do it as we have some local classic meet ups starting on the Sunday!

Hi All,
Quick update!
As you can see from the photo I posted in “X1/9 Spotting”, I made it to my first show this year.
Completed replacing both offside and nearside diff oil seals and reassembled everything. Hit a few snags along the way but can honestly say that after doing it once, I would fly through doing it again. Learnt a few tricks along the way to simplify the process without the need for additional kit. I plan to do a write up soon as promised.
My X1/9 is dry as a bone underneath now!
