Oil leak update and engine part identification help! was created by Gareth Lloyd
Hi Everyone,
Oh Lord......you've all been so patient listening to my oil leak saga!
Had a furious moment today after taking the X1/9 for a spin to find that the leak had only got worse.
Anyway, tried a couple of things and actually wrapped the distributor base in a cloth to see if it would catch it. After checking it on my return, I had an epiphany and finally found the source of the leak!
I'm posting this in the hope that it might help someone at a later date.
It's coming from just under what I think is a redundant vacuum pump for the old ignition system. If someone could confirm that's what it is I'd appreciate it.
(I've attached a photo)
From underneath, it's spraying oil over the distributor base and it's going everywhere.
Now, the question I have is if I can just remove this and blank it off somehow?
Does it need an oil drain to this?.....is there such a thing as a blank plate and gasket after it's removal?
Has anyone done this before?
Thanks,
Gareth.

......well.....reliably informed by fellow club member Kev Williams that it's the old redundant fuel pump as I have an electric one fitted.
I've removed it and would you believe that the little hole in the side of this old fuel pump has been the headache I've had for months!
(I've attached a photo)
Oil has been been spraying out of this hole every time I took it for a drive and making me insane!
Now to either blank it off or block the tiny hole with a small grub screw maybe.
The lesson to be had here is to never give up!!
Gareth.

.....I couldn't find one on Eurosport but ordered a mechanical fuel pump blanking plate with gasket from Ebay.
Hopefully this will finally solve the oil leak and return my sanity!!!

......that's where I've got my blanking plate from Alan!
I still can't figure out why the old fuel pump has that hole underneath as in the photo.
It looks like it's been formed there but I haven't got another old mechanical fuel pump for reference.
Gareth.

No facts but just a guess - an air bleed on the other side of the diaphragm perhaps??

......yes, perhaps Alan.
It would make sense.
Perhaps the diaphragm has perished inside and allowed the oil and fumes out.
It took so long to find because from every angle you look at it, the tiny hole was underneath the body of it.
When I put my finger near the hole with engine running, it was throwing oil out all over the place.
Engine and the area all now cleaned off waiting for the blanking plate and gasket to be delivered!

.....well, that was what I thought was going to be an easy job that turned into a faff!
It turned out that the blank plate gasket wasn't quite big enough to cover a small hole where the old mechanical pump attached.
I had to go out and buy some gasket sealant.
Secondly, the existing bolts in the block for the pump weren't threaded all the way and the blank plate wasn't thick enough to space off to where the thread started.
So, had to go out and get some washers to space off the nuts!
Anyway, all done and oil leak finally fixed!......one happy X1/9 owner!!
