Headlight bulb upgrade....any suggestions? was created by Gareth Lloyd
Hi All,
I have the stock headlight bulbs in my car at the moment.
Obviously times have changed and they don't throw out as much light as I'd like.
Can anyone recommend a bulb type that they have been impressed with?
I'm not averse to going LED but I don't think it's allowed in the UK yet is it?
Correct me if I'm wrong but they would be H4 types wouldn't they?
Thanks,
Gareth.

led as far as i know are not legal , however i fitted mine in place after the mot , your right the halogens are very dim , and even the mot tester said they only just passed the test re light output , the led,s h4 headlights are so much better , , maybe have a look on amazon , for good quality ones ie phillips or hella or a well known make ,they do led bulbs , and maybe look at some reviews that people have made when they have tested the bulbs

Did you carry out the dipped beam relay upgrades, this made a huge difference to my car when driving at night

.......I'm not aware of the "dipped beam relay" upgrade Ian.
I'd be interested to learn more about this.
Gareth.

It is in the technical section of this website and has been covered in the club magazine, basically the dipped beam is poor because the voltage to the headlights goes through the stalk switch and looses power due to carbon buildup in the switch so you use the switch to power a relay which has a connection to the battery and therefore a full 12v supply to the headlight. I did it recently and it made a huge improvement to night driving

Hi Ian,
This again is yet another example of a fantastic tip by someone on a dedicated forum that is a lifeline for me as a new owner.
I will definately dig out the technical guide on this and go through it.
Thank you so much for the great head up.
All the best,
Gareth.
