When changing the oil on my car the other day I noticed that the bolt and bush coupling the gear selector to the gear rod was sloppy. Gears had been getting harder to engage and replacing the bolt/bush solved it. I had the same problem just after I bought the car in 2014.
It struck me that anyone with similar gear changing problems might do this ten minute £6 job first.
