Petrol fume smell was created by Garry Ursin-smith
Hi. Just bought an 89 x19 but seems to smell of fumes when parked in garage. Previous owner put new fuel pump on recently. Seems ok and i can"t see any leaks anywhere. Anyone any idea what may be the cause. Thanks.

Mine was dining this recently. Check all the the fuel hoses for cracks first and all the clips are tight they may need nipping up. check the carb is secure and the large brass carb filter housing under the fuel inlet and outlet is tight. Check the accelerator pump cover screws are nipped up and also the top of the carb securing the float bowl.

And in my case, whilst sorting my car ready for the road after a 20year sleep! removed the petrol tank
to clean the old fuel out thoroughly.
Well, it promptly leaked! 1985 car with not 30kmiles and the tank had rusted at the bottom.
Whilst at the MITCAR Garden last year, a Fiat - think it was a Panda, just started to leak petrol in the car park.

If you have just bought the car, it would be worth replacing the fuel lines. Even if these aren't the original ones. Modern fuel can attack the older rubber types.

Thank you for this. All hoses etc have been replaced. Prev owner just told me it is evaporation from the carberettor float chambers. If you sniff the inlet to the air filter this is where comes from.
Tbh seems to be okay now after 2 days of non use. So will keep an eye on it and let it cool outside after use before garaging it straight away, in future

May be worth a carb service kit. Replace the needle valve and float.
If the valve has any wear or tiny spec of dirt can cause extra petrol to overfill the float chamber!
I fitted two fuel filters in the new rubber hoses when fitting my electric pump.
Dirt and contamination in the petrol WILL play havoc with your Weber!

I was having major problems with petrol smell also, which seemed especially bad after filling up, so I was suspecting either the fuel tank or filler. I was contemplating removing the fuel tank, but was glad I didn't, as after more thorough inspection with a lamp I found petrol weeping from around the middle gasket of the fuel pump at the back of the engine. It wasn't enough to drip down and reveal itself, but the pump was quite wet. With the usual amount of contortion I have now fitted a new pump form Eurosport (thank you Claire), and the problem is solved. I dismantled the old pump and found that the rubber pumping diaphragm had split, allowing fuel to leak through into the lower part of the pump, from where it escapes externally.

Hi Andrew,
I had a smell after the car was parked in the garage which was a petrol / oil mixture accumulating on the carburettor heat shield. This came from the carburettor to head shield gasket leaking but could come from the pipe that goes to the air cleaner.
Best wishes, Geoffrey.
