I've had a problem with an intermittent starter motor for a while, sometimes it fires, other times it just clicks. The garage have had a look at all the starter motor connections and the issue improved but still remained.
Following advice from this forum, I check the earth strap from the gearbox to the chassis, it looked very rusty, so I changed it for a new one from Eurosport
www.eurosport-uk.net/shop/index.php?main...=1_6&products_id=599
and the problem is solved, the starter fires every time now.
Its an easy job just 2x 13mm bolts hold it on.
Thank you.

Thanks for sharing Richard. I've suffered the same issue for many years, so I'll try that myself.

I replaced my strap as a matter of course when getting my 85 VS back on the road (after 20years waiting in the garage).
I bought one from Claire at Eurosport and I have to say its a most impressive and very well made heavy strap.
I would recommend changing your earth strap if they look at all in poor condition, and they are less than £10. They also carry all your charging current from the alternator so play a part in keeping your battery well.
