carbon fibre was created by David Moult
I have just repaired my lawn mower chassis using carbon fibre tissue and polyester resin. I am impressed. It followed complex shapes easily and sets like steel. I covered the slight difference in thickness on the outside with devcon.
Welding the cars in non structural areas is a pain. This stuff is quick and strong, not like fibreglass at all. What do you think, have any of you tried it?

Hi David,
Sounds interesting. I would give it a go on areas that are not structural.
Where did you get it from and was there a product name?
Cheers

Dear Andy, I bought the tissue from an aeromodelling friend who worked for Rolls Royce Derby. He purloined it when he left I think. It is like thick black tissue paper. It is very ligh and gives immense strength to very light balsa structures when glued whith a rigid setting glue or resin.
I made glider wings with 1/32 balsa skin covered in the tissue and bonded with aeromodelling dope which sets rigid. The wings ars very stiff in all axis.
Using it on the lawnmower was so much better than glass fibre. If Boeing can make airliners out of it it must be strong, there are no fibre glass airliners, only gliders and light aircraft.
As for buying it comercially I havn't but it is available woven and in tissue. The woven would be much stronger than the tissue I used. The polyester resin I used set it like steel. It moulds easily into complex areas and sticks.
Now if I find rust my heart will not sink, I will cut it out and fix it so it will never rust again.
