Oil Change. was created by Jason
I just went to change my oil but I'm struggling with tools for the job !
It appears that I need a socket that is square and not hexagon.
I've googled it and all I can find is 12mm hex this and 12mm hex key that, but mine has a square thing sticking out of the middle of a large hexagonal plug.
Kind of looks like it might be 2 ways to undo it.
A large socket 25-30 (which I don't have)
A socket that is square both ends. My 12mm spanner fits on the square bit nice but I don't think its man enough for the job.
Anyone know what tools I need, I'll pop out and get them tomorrow, I'm fed up with asking google and getting the same wrong answer.
I thought some one on here might understand better.
Many thanks
Jason

Why not use an open ended spanner the same size as the square bit?

Whatever you use to undo the plug and replace it with don't repeat the common mistake, which appears to have been done here, and that is to do the sump plug up with as much force as is possible. Not only does it not need to be that tight but you risk damaging the thread in the alloy sump. There may be a torque figure in a Haynes manual. It may have been overtightened to compensate for a dodgy sealing washer, always replace with a new copper, or equivalent washer.

Guys, thanks for taking time to reply.
It seemed to me that I would be rounding off the square sump plug so I decided to go and buy a 29mm socket and undo the big plug.
I had to get the car quiet high to get the lever bar to get it out but I got there in the end.
Oil is now changed as well as fresh gearbox oil.
Thanks for your time.
