Speedometer drive removal was created by Keith Waterhouse
Hello All,
I’m struggling a bit with this one any help or comments would be much appreciated. A few weeks ago I thought I had disturbed the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer. I’ve undone the cable at the gearbox and turned it with an electric drill and all seems ok. However, I now can’t screw the knurled nut at the gearbox end back onto the speedo drive the threads just won’t go together. It is possible to remove the speedo cable drive from the gear box? It looks as though it’s screwed into the gearbox and held in position with an Allen headed screw. I thought that the threads on the nut and drive unit might need reworking.
Thank you
Keith

Hi Keith,
You remove the grub screw and gently grip the thread with pliers or mole grips. (you should wrap something round the threads such as a bit of card so you don't damage the threads). Then simply twist the unit clockwise or anticlockwise to free it up. It doesn't screw in, just slides in and out complete with the nylon gear but it sticks after time. Then just lubricate it and slide it back in making sure to line up the grub screw dimple.
Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike,
Thank you for your reply; I’ll try doing that tomorrow. I never thought that putting the cable back would be so difficult. I can only assume that the threads have been damaged in the past. Hopefully when I get the drive unit out I’ll be able to use both hands and put the drive unit back with the cable attached to it.
Regards
Keith

Hi Mike,
I got the drive unit out of the gear box using the method you suggested. As I thought the threads have been damaged, it looks like I've found a bodge from many years ago. Claire at Eurosport is going to check her used stock for a replacement. I just hope that the ones in four speed boxes are the same as those in 1500's.
Regards

I'm no gearbox expert but I suspect that the 4 speed unit may not work due to different final drive ratio and subsequent speedo drive gearing. I stand to be corrected on this one though.

I found an engineering company in Leeds this morning that were able to re-cut the thread on my speedo drive, it's almost like new. Everything went back really well, job now done. Thanks.
