Carb Fan

Carb Fan was created by David Moult
I removed the fan and all its ducting the other day. I thought, I have an electric fuel pump and that cools the carburettor when left for a few seconds before hot starting. All that the fan did was drain the battery. There is lots more space in the engine bay now for air to circulate and for access.
If you have an electric fuel pump I recommend getting rid of the fan and ducting, the car works better.

The Carburettor cooling fan doesn’t come on often with the standard sensor screwed into the carb. I bought a replacement from Eurosport that came on at a lower temperature in an attempt to cure hot starting problems. It came on most times the car stopped after that. Modern fuel without lead seems to have a lower boiling point and the fuel evaporates from the carb when the heat from the exhaust soaks into it. The existing fan and ducting is meant to remedy this but I haven't found that it does. If you have a replacement electric fuel pump that is the cure and you don't need the fan or ducting. An electric fuel pump is a good idea anyway as you don't have to crank the engine first to get fuel into the carb. All top end cars used to have electric fuel pumps, my Rover 100 P4 had two.

David, is this an electric pump you've fitted yourself? Which one did you use?

Any recommendations of a preferred electric fuel pump, will give this a bash!

Here is a photo of the installation. The fuel pump is German, probably a HUCO. It is mounted on a bracket I made from a steel corner brace for shelves or cupboards. The silver stuff is heat reflective tube covering I got when I was in Australia last year. The black corrugated tube is the modification to feed cold air to the carb from down near the road. A K&N filter is in the housing. I chopped off about 10cm of the carb intake and as you can see fixed it with a simple self tapping screw. It works very well. I hope this is useful. Much better access to the thermostat housing and pipes as well.

Looks great! Thanks for the info and the pic.
No pressure regulator?
Did you remove and blank off the old mechanical pump mounting or just leave it in place?
I assume the fuel return pipe from the carb to the tank is still in place? Can't see it in the pic. I know some fuel systems don't have a return pipe...

The car had the pump when I got it and I haven’t looked to see if the old pump is blanked off or just disconnected, no pipes to it anyway. No fuel regulator, the fuel just goes to the carb an any not needed back to the tank. When I start it hot or cold I listen over my shoulder for the sound of fuel draining back in to the tank, give it a few seconds to cool the carb, three prods on the accelerator and from cold an instant start and from warm a few cranks.
