I've always wondered what it was for.
It may be that the reservoir was used on another vehicle in the range and required the motor or whatever to be fitted there.

I admire the way the Italians proudly left their mark, even on the most trivial piece of interior trim...
Is it right that the Italian Govt restricted the manufacturers to only use Italian suppliers?

I agree, headlamp wash. I've got no evidence to support it but it was a legal requirement in scandanavian countries way back, hence all those Volvos and Saabs with tiny headlamp wipers! If Fiat wanted to sell in those countries I suspect they would have had to have fitted it. Not sure how they would get the daytime running lights though... permanently raised headlights? Any Swedish exxy owners out there?
