Seat base springs was created by Andrew Sinclair
Always wondered why the newly upholstered seats in my 1500 were so uncomfortable...
I bought the car last spring and it had been the subject of a £6,000 resto... money spent over a year or two around 2010. It's great, just let down by details, which I'm gradually sorting. The seats were uncomfortable, so while I'm waiting for a windscreen to be delivered from Germany I thought I'd strip the interior out, fit a hifi, wash the carpet and sort the seats. Well... the seat base has no springs in it! Just a sheet of plywood! F***ing cowboys... I seriously believe the only good restorations are the ones you do yourself...
So- anyone replaced the springs before? I've seen a few available on ebay, a few different sizes though so before I take the plunge I just thought I'd ask if anyone has done the job before and knows which springs to buy...
Looks relatively straightforward, which is why I can't understand the bodge...

It's likely they bodged the seats because the original springs rusted away.
However, plywood isn't the most comfortable
They shouldn't be too difficult to fit, they are located with tabs on each side of the seat base.
I would try and get some old seats off ebay (or similar) that have the springs still in place. Give them a good wire brushing and a liberal coat of Hammerite and they should be fine.
Or you could just swap the seat covers over to the new base after refurbing it....

I think not only the springs rusted away but also the locating tabs in the metal seat base too. I'll have to weld a couple of new tabs onto the base of the driver's seat. Straightforward enough repair though, I really can't understand why the restorer didn't do the job properly, bearing in mind the amount of welding he did on the body...
Anyway, it'll be done right now!
I'm ordering some springs tomorrow and I'll do the job later in the week.
