Hello and help!

Good evening all,

After months and months of searching I've finally purchased a Bertone X1/9... and what feels like half a cars worth of spares alongside it!

It's an eBay special I won for 1300, a little over the odds but the sale of spares will bring it in under 1000.

Anyway, generally it's in fair condition for 120000 miles, it does have rust and I'm thinking it deserves a full restoration in the future.

What is causing me a headache is the uno I.e engine that's fitted. It was fitted by the previous owner who obviously knew his stuff but alas I'm looking at a tiny engine bay wondering where I start in trying to finish the conversion!

Does anyone have a comprehensive guide to the uni conversion? The engine is in, gearbox internals swapped, punto gt shaft installed and it all rolls but alas the plumbing and wiring is still required (and the exhaust is shot!).

Any local X1/9 nuts, kettle is always on!

Hello and welcome :)

"...it does have rust..."

Trust me; even the ones that don't have rust, do...
I'm sure there will be folks on here who know the conversion well and will assist.
Your car looks good though, I like the colour and of course the silly bumpers are gone...

Good luck!

Thanks! It is a smart little thing, I've just got to figure out the best route to making it roadworthy! I am considering getting a lot of the bits and pieces galvanised, or at least powder coated, and then once the rust is gone getting a professional waxoyl job done.

Congratulations on the purchase and welcome. I did the turbo conversion (albeit a 1400) a few years ago and would be happy to give advice where I can. However, if you are not dead set on a turbo engine then I would seriously consider putting the 1500 back after a good tune up. A good 1500 can put out as much as a standard 1300 turbo without the very considerable effort sorting out the wiring, ignition, fuel system, exhaust, worn turbo, etc. Also some of the standard engine management parts are almost unobtainable e.g air flow meters. Also consider that nearly all turbo engines will have been ragged silly in their time and so may have serious internal issues. When I rebuilt my engine it had cracks in the head (standard fault on the turbo engine) damaged pistons, worn crank, worn bores etc - with some basic tuning it was still putting out 130hp but could have let go in a big way at any moment.
Regarding the rust issue - if it doesn't show or is unlikely to fall off then my route was waxoyl and avoid wet roads

Thanks for your insight - I have to admit there are two avenues to this one, return to standard but have a very average car due to its reasonably high mileage or make a proper little toy. The turbo is simply in place until I can justify a v6 swap in the future... one that I'll start myself so I know what goes where!

I can't say I'm overly familiar with either the standard or uno engine but I have read very good things about the uno swap - alas it shall remain for now!

nice looking arse on that car, any further pictures of the bumper brackets, as that's my next big job.

Can't help with the turbo thing, sorry, but can vouch for grins that a stock 1500cc provides!
