While I was under the car looking at a leak I rattled the gear selector rod and found a lot of play at the gear box end. The nut that I had replaced eighteen months ago was loose. I had tightened it but I re tightened it and the second gear selection problem that was developing went away. I was surprised it had loosened and will take it apart and refit with locktite. I wouldn't have known if not looking for something else.
