Electrics, advice needed

Ok so where to even start. I've had a general problem for the last two years that no one has been able to solve of the car randomly dying whilst driving. Countless things have been changed but the one thing that hasn't really been looked at is the electrics.

Added to this the car seems to destroy batteries. In the last year I've gone through 3 batteries that when checked have all failed. It seems a mighty coincidence this keeps happening. There's a few other electrical quirks like the headlights will independently pop up when the windows are operated and keep moving for a while afterwards.

Ive checked and cleaned up the main earth from the engine but does anyone have any ideas whats going on? I know pretty much nothing about electrics and am happy to put it in somewhere to get looked at but don't even really know where to try, my local garages had to google what an X1/9 was which doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Hi Grant,

As I'm fairly local to you and have had some suitably weird X1/9 electrical maladies in the past I would be more than happy to lend a hand with trying to find what is going on here.

If you think it's worth a try just drop me a pm and we could arrange to meet up?

Cheers

Dave

I had EXACTLY this problem last year. It turned out to be the wires which go into the distributor body from the electronic ignition module. The rubber grommet had come adrift from the hole in the distributor body and the thin cable sheaths had rubbed through to the bare wires, resulting in them shorting on the distributor casing causing an instant loss of ignition for no obvious reason. It would then restart and do it again at random moments. Drove me nuts for weeks til I found it...
I don't know what ignition system you have but it might be applicable to at least this part of your problem... :)
