Classic car tax exempt refunds. was created by JB
I've just realised that my car has been tax exempt since 1/4/2016 yet the DVLA has taken my money up til when my current disc runs out on 31st January.
I didn't realise it was the owner who has to apply for exemption, the DVLA don't notify you.
Can I claim back the money paid to the DVLA since 1/4/2016 or only from the date that I applied for the exemption?

I dont suppose you can cancel your tax and get a refund as in when you sell or scrap a car you can claim the remainder back?
However, you would only get Januarys tax back for that. Not sure whether there is any mechanism for claiming it fully back?

Just called the DVLA and they told me it was my own fault for not realising my car had been tax exempt.
So had it not been flagged up to me they would have continued to collect money from me even though their computer had told them it was tax exempt.
Surely that's not entirely legal or ethical!!!!
In fact I could go as far as suggesting it's theft?
They knew it was tax exempt but kept taking the money!
Funny how if I hadn't paid and tax and it was due I'd be up in court!!!!

Got to be worth a solicitors letter? As you say, if the situation was reversed, they would have escalated it to legal status by now?
Or you could refuse to pay tax on one of your "moderns", on the grounds that they "owe" you some road fund?

They must be making thousands of pounds this way.
It really is legalised fraud!
I can see a PPI style revolt at some point!
