Young Driver Insurance

Hi all

I'm coming to the end of restoring a 1979 1500 and now have the woes of sorting insurance.

Does anyone know of any companies that will give a decent quote for an 18 year old? I've tried a few classic ones so far, but they're terrible and a generic modern car insurer is 700 quid cheaper so far.

Any help is very much appreciated!

Thanks

James

How many miles you thinking of doing? If you go on Gocompare or something and set the mileage to 7500 you might get something cheaper. Limited mileage policies are usually much cheaper.

I'm 26 and my insurance is 180 a year with Admiral.

I had my car (the one in the pic) and insured it at 17 but had to be on my Dad's insurance. After a year or so I started to build up my no claims. It was about £800 the first year but that was 16 years ago!

If you are unable to do that, try Sky insurance. The problem you will have is most classic policies have a minimum age of 25.

I've had a few classic quotes but they're all crazy, 4800 for one?!

I'll try Sky, I've definitely not tried all the main ones yet.

Cheers

standard car policies are not on an agreed value basis and would not normally let you keep the salvage. It wouldn't take much damage for an insurer to write-off an X1/9 based on mainstream bodyshop hourly rates.

Putting the policy in the name of a parent should make no difference to cost as premium is based on age of the main user.

Classic car policies tend to be issued on a social, domestic and pleasure basis which means they can't be used for commuting.

speak to an insurance broker, they should be better than an online system not designed for old cars and young drivers.
