What do you recommend? I find I really have to push hard for that last bit of stopping. I am not a fast driver but am used to powerful breaks in the Citroens I have owned. Green stuff?

I'm not sure that the make will make much difference. What made a fantastic difference to my stopping quickly and in a straight line was replacing the flexi hoses. They had broken down inside and blocking the fluid flow.

Oh, and I'm used to Citroen cx brakes too !

Also worth replacing the brake fluid if it hasn't been done recently. Ideally every two years.

It's worth taking the callipers off and cleaning he sliding surfaces as the oft stated poor performance can be due to sticky sliders. However, you are never going to be at risk of putting yourself through the windscreen, it's part of the charm of an old car

My car came with brakes that felt very "wooden". With plenty of effort, they would stop the car on it's nose but felt awful.

I rebuilt all four calipers, new shoes, new fluid and also replaced the rear flexis, they feel a million times better now. Wasn't even especially expensive, the rebuild kits are cheap enough, hoses were only a tenner each I think.
