Finally bitten the bullet and given Colotti the order to machine the straight cut dog gears. The graph shows the ratios I have finally settled on.

Hi Jon. Expensive – yes. However, to keep the X1/9 competitive in the Modified under 1.4L category requires a bit of consideration on how to spend the budget (assuming I had set a budget!). The engine will be high revving so the biggest issues I have are: gear ratios to keep it in the power band up to a maximum speed of around 90 mph and shifting gear at high revs. The straight cut box solves these issues. The rest of the car I don’t need to spend much more money on, just time. The only other major item I suppose will be the slick tyres but hopefully these will last a full season if I stick mainly to hillclimbs rather than sprints.
Andy is correct – mini holiday (1 day!) to Modena to pick up the gears from Colotti.

Your very right in saying the gear ratios are not ideal and if you are going for the modified class then you've made the right move. I like the idea of picking them up in person.
As my car will still be used on the road a lot I'll stick with the more user friendly and cheaper standard gearbox and have to put up with it's shortcomings for competition use. If only I could raise first gear to somewhere in-between 1st & 2nd then I would be a very happy man. Can't wait to see and hear the new engine
