Electronic Ignition Problems

Having been advised that swapping the old points for an electronic ignition would be good idea I have run into a few problems and wondered if anyone had any advice.

From all that I'd been told it was a pretty easy thing to do but having fitted it the engine won't start at all, as if the timing was way out. On taking it to a garage they then did the same and came up against exactly the same problem, as if this kit didn't actually fit the distributor.

This is the kit: pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=w...422&globalID=EBAY-GB

And attached is a photo of it.

Am I missing something obvious here? The car is a 1988 1500.

Perhaps they've supplied the wrong kit? I am afraid I only have experience of lumenition on 2cvs. I've left the X19 standard.

They are in theory very simple to fit and are a definite improvement, it looks like you have all the parts. I would take the spark plugs out and see if you have a spark in sequence at each of them when you crank it over, at least then you know the system is functioning. Then it must be a case of timing it up correctly. If no spark then check the installation. It's a while since I fitted one of these kits but I think condensers are redundant and perhaps check the type of coil - ballast or non ballast. There is the outside possibility that the unit is faulty.

It's as if the timing is way out. The garage managed to get it going by turning the distributor through 90 degrees but it wouldn't run smoothly enough to keep going.

Do you happen to know whether it's a ballasted coil that's needed or not?

I'm tempted to try and return it and go for a different type.

I fitted system to my roadgoing car about 2 years ago.
Easy fit for me and worked perfectly after I pushed the round section properly onto rotating shaft of distributor.
No more dodgy points.

Grant, can you confirm you have an S135 distributor and not S178? The type number is embossed on the body of the dizzy.

The module should work with a standard 3 ohm coil. UK cars never had ballasted coils.

Good point Gordon as I seem to remember that was an issue when I fitted such a kit. Can the round thing be fitted in the wrong location ie the magnetic poles (you can usually see the ends on top of the round thing) not in line with the cam lobes/or where they should be.

The trigger wheel should be moulded to fit over the lobes so it is a firm push fit and can't rotate on the shaft and can't fit at the wrong angle.

If it can be turned on the dizzy shaft then it is the wrong trigger wheel!

Its definitely the S135 yes. At the moment, and apologies if this isnt relevant at all, the cap is pointed roughly towards centre of the engine.

The coil was replaced some time ago with this one: www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Fiat_X19_1.5_...84f8aa594897c&000197

As an additional problem, it appears that the rev counter is now broken. According to an auto electrician there's nothing wrong with the wiring and the only thing he could think of that would have knackered it is... an electronic ignition.

This is becoming a genie that I very much wish would go back in its bottle!
