HI
Just joined the X19 fraternity after lusting after one since the late 80s.
Its a non runner at present needing some welding and sorting an ignition wiring problem. Anyone know of C430 DUD? Care has an X19 owners club sticker in the windscreen...?
Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian,
Welcome to the forum.
The car is not one that's known to me. Have you any pictures of the car?

Hello,
My name is Jamie and I have only just joined the car club, Im currently living in Australia and own a 1980 fiat x19, which Im restoring. Im having a problem with my grear box it is a four speed, I seem to start off in Ist okay, second okay third it just doesnt wont to go into gear but will slide into fourth.
So im thinking. A. The gear box is stuffed and it needs to be replaced. B.The linkage from the gear stick to the box leaver is out of wack or C. that the engine has slumped down little mabey one of the engine mounts are warn. Some one said to me try lifting the engine a little and try then. Has any one had this problems like this and is it a huge job to take the gear box off and get it back on??
Thanks Jamie.

Hi Jamie and welcome to the club – X19 gearboxes are not their strongpoint. In particular, the syncos wear quite badly. So your 3rd synco could well be causing your issue. If you match your engine revs while trying to select 3rd, does this help with selection? If so, then this would point to the syncro. However, correct alignment of the linkage does help smooth gear selection but if you can select the other gears, than this is less likely. Dropping the gearbox off from below is not too bad only if you have good facilities to lift the car safely, I have attached an old photo of my car suitably raised and cross member removed for a gearbox removal. Good luck.

It is possible to remove the gearbox with the engine still in place but I have always found that removing the two together is easier especially when it comes to refitting. Removing the two together is a good opportunity to tackle any other engine/gearbox/clutch related problems at the same time. As Martin says the synchros are a problem but usually the gearbox can be rebuilt at very reasonable costs. The four speed boxes must be a bit of rarity these says and so perhaps an opportunity to change to five speed unless originality is important

Thanks Martin,
I'm also thinking of mabey replacing gear box with a five speed, is there a lot of modification involved. I've moved to a more open road area and a 5 speed box would be great.

Thanks again, it's almost impossible to find a five speed box around Australia, it looks like I will be rebuilding the four speed.
If there any tube videos on removing the gear box that anybody knows of, I would really appreciate it.
